All England Dressage Derby Championships at Hickstead
Leading dressage riders will take part in 5 days of top competition at the newly named All England Dressage Derby Championships at Hickstead, on 24th - 28th July. As the UK's premier dressage venue, Dressage at Hickstead boasts a unique 'garden party' atmosphere that is relished by riders and spectators alike. This year promises an extravaganza of dressage at all levels in the build up to hosting the 2003 European Championships.
Among the most popular classes are the All England National Young Horse Championships for 5 and 6 year olds sponsored by Shearwater Corporate Services. The Championships are designed to bring future international prospects to the fore and, since their inception, they have become one of the most successful and prestigious young horse competitions.
David Holmes, Chief Executive of British Dressage, says "Young horse classes are particularly important in our sport because they heighten people's awareness of breeding issues. These Championships provide an opportunity to see the dressage horses of the future experiencing their first taste of the atmosphere at a major event."
An interesting innovation this year is the Judge and be Judged competition. A group of invited high profile judges and riders will each ride a test while being judged by the rest of the group. The class is the product of much creative thinking by Show Director, Dane Rawlins. "The judges will not only have to compete against each other, but will have to judge each other too! It should provide some interesting results." he said.
Another addition to the schedule is the popular and entertaining Intermediare 1 Pas de Deux to music, which will take place on Saturday afternoon. The class always interests spectators and gives competitors the chance to show flair and interpretation of the music while maintaining the accuracy of their movements.

BHS Proposes National Livery Yard Plan
A scheme to be launched shortly will help livery yard owners to attract new business. The British Horse Society is currently putting the finishing touches to The British Horse Society Livery Yard Approval Scheme from which a list of recognised businesses will be available nationally.
DEFRA minister Elliot Morley recently highlighted the fact that while establishments boarding dogs and cats had to be licensed, livery yards did not, and he is suggesting that this anomaly is eradicated in the proposed "modernisation" of the Protection of Animals Act.
"While the Society's scheme does not demand legislation, it will establish standards that will need to be met by member businesses," said BHS chief executive Kay Driver. "It will also provide the basis for a national register which will be available to people seeking livery facilities."

3 Year Ban for Causing Unnecessary Suffering to a Horse
Yesterday, Thursday 16th May, at Hyndburn Magistrates Courts in Accrington, Allan Clynch, from Rishton, Lancashire, was banned from keeping horses for 3 years for causing unnecessary suffering to a horse in his ownership, and fined £400 with £600 costs.
On 4th October last year Chris Williamson, ILPH (International League for the Protection of Horses) Field Officer for N.W. England received an anonymous call from a complainant who was concerned for the welfare of a horse on allotments in Rishton.
Comments Chris, "When I saw Duke, as he was called, I was appalled at his condition, he was so thin he could hardly stand, let alone walk, unaided. To let a horse get into that condition was wanton cruelty, for which there is no excuse.

War Emblem's front foot showing new raceplate
War Emblem's Winning Kentucky Derby Formula Included The Latest Hoofwear From Europe
Lousville, KY Kentucky Derby winner War Emblem looks every bit the classic Derby winner. He ís lean, fit, and fast, all right, like all his predecessors. But only from the ankles up. There was something very different about this racehorse.
War Emblem was the first winner of the Run for the Roses to wear a new brand of racehorse shoe, newly imported to the USA from Holland. Manufactured by the long-established metalworking firm of Kerckhaert Horseshoes Company in Vogelwaarde, Holland, the aluminum shoes look similar to the shoes manufactured in America.
But to the eye and feel of a professional farrier, there is a difference in these shoes. And perhaps, most importantly, there is some difference to the horse. The shoes are shaped more precisely to the natural shape of the Thoroughbred hoof. According to Steve Norman, the man who nailed them onto War Emblemís feet, they have a nail placement that gives plenty of options, sole relief and a slightly wider stock that gives better support. The strength of the shoes practically eliminates spreading or distortion of the shoe.

Horse Webbers Against Cruelty - WHY??
A group of us from the Horseweb-uk.com message boards have started a campaign to raise awareness of the acts of cruelty and neglect toward horses and donkies, and the lack of help that the authorities give in these cases.
I own rescued horses and so have quite a large number of the "horse webbers" that are supporting the campaign, many of these horses and ponies have been rescued because the authorities have done nothing.
I have initially given ourselves a year to leave the petition running and to try and make a difference although I can see this is going to be an on going thing. So far we are just running with volunteers and I bought the domain and am web master for the site. There are a few volunteers around the country keeping their ears open for news of attacks or rescues and any horse news in general.

Farmers Call For World Cup Team Effort
The NFU is calling on England football fans to take full precautions to ensure they don't bring foot and mouth disease back from their World Cup trip to Japan and South Korea. Farmers are calling for the support of England fans that will travel to Jeju in South Korea for the England v South Korea World Cup warm-up match on Tuesday (21 May).
That match is the only game England will be playing in South Korea - currently fighting a major foot and mouth epidemic - but it still poses a very real threat, say UK farmers. NFU President Ben Gill said: "Farmers wish our England football team the very best of luck. But it would be an absolute tragedy if we let down our guard and let foot and mouth back into the country. "I would implore those fans who attend the South Korean friendly to stay away from infected areas and avoid coming into contact with livestock during their travels.

Vehicle Inspectorate Impound Illegal Transporters
Illegal transporters are being targeted in a new offensive being launched by the Department of Transport and the Vehicle Inspectorate. This new move means that horsebox owners who are receiving any form of payment for transporting horses without an Operators Licence (when they should have one) will have their vehicles impounded and then sold or scrapped.
"Over the last few years many people have been tempted to accept payment for transporting horses, often with the best intentions," explained Jon Phillips, Managing Director of the Organisation Horsebox and Trailer Owners. "We have even heard of horsebox owners being recruited by rescue companies to assist others in the case of breakdown. This is fine if the individual concerned has a personal operators licence and the correct hire and reward insurance. If not, they now stand a very real chance of losing their vehicle altogether. Even being told that the company concerned holds a licence and insurance that covers you simply is not good enough, no matter how reliable or well known that company appears to be."

It’ll soon be that time of year when flies, midges, ticks and all sorts of other horrid things start to make your horse’s life itchy and miserable throughout the summer months, so this brand new product from Hunter Horsecare is really welcome.
Hunter’s Fly Off Band is a splendidly simple idea to bring relief during the warmer months: it fits neatly onto the existing head collar or bridle and is fully adjustable to be as comfy and as non-snag as possible. Quick-release Velcro fastening ensures that it fits easily and snugly, offering welcome protection to those vulnerable areas around the mouth, nose, ears and eyes, which get really irritated.
The Fly Off Band brings relief for more than a few short weeks, too, as it’s refillable. This makes it very effective and affordable, because you only use as much repellent solution as you need at any one time, so it’s ideal for any climate. Hunter’s fly repellent solution has a slow release action, is clean and effective, and helps to deter all disease carrying flies and insects while soothing the discomfort of minor skin irritations and bites. Its long lasting action means that it is also very effective around stables and in horse boxes.
