Long Wins 2002 MD Barns Amateur High-Point Award

Mistie
Long earned the first annual 2002 MD Barns Amateur High-Point Award
when she amassed an incredible 572 points in the new Amateur Achievement
Award program. As the 2002 High-Point Amateur, Long will receive
a two-stall horse barn provided by Arabian Horse AssociationSM (AHASM)
Corporate Partner MD Barns. During the year she earned seven national
championships, seven reserve championships, 10 national top tens
and 18 regional titles. Long also achieved the highest performance
award, Rider of Excellence, in the Amateur Achievement Award program’s
inaugural year. The Amateur Achievement Award program recognizes
the accomplishments of adult amateurs and youth members participating
in shows and distance ride events.
“It
has been an amazing year,” says Mistie Long, “It’s
very exciting to win the barn, as well as having so much success
at the shows. It was my last year showing as a junior which made
it a really big year for me.”
Long
is not only a talented rider, she is also versatile. Since she started
showing on the Arabian circuit at age 6, Long has earned championships
in an array of disciplines. At the national level Long has received
titles in trail, hunter pleasure, reining, western pleasure, showmanship,
western side saddle, western horsemanship and equitation. The 120
points Long earned this year at Youth Nationals alone were in five
different divisions.
The
highlight of Mistie Long’s successful year came at Canadian
Nationals when she rode in her last junior classes. “Showing
for the last time at Youth Nationals was very difficult, but there
was Canadian Nationals to look forward to. I will miss being able
to show in equitation classes but I am looking forward to moving
into the adult amateur division.”
What
is her secret? “Great horses,” says Long. While she is
quick to list some of her favorite horses: Pentacle+// (Bi Bask
x Pentance), Galvan+/ (*Galbor x Havanna Moon), Peborr (Ferborr
x Pepsi) and GS Knight Wind+// (Crimson Knight x GSA Wind Allure)
she points out that all her riding experiences have been valuable.
“Even though I have my favorite horses, I’ve loved all
the horses I have ridden. They all have different qualities and
attitudes. Each of them had something to teach me. I also really
enjoy working with junior horses, training and working them,”
says Long.
Long
plans to keep busy in 2003, she plans to fill the “extra”
time she has learning a new discipline and is looking to purchase
her first English horse.
“I
would like to thank everyone who has helped me succeed. I would
especially like to thank my parents and trainers.” Her motto?
“Never give up. If you want to succeed, all you need is the
determination and will to do it.”
Long’s
mother and trainer, Laurie Long, expressed her delight in the program
and High-Point award, “We are so excited about winning the
barn. It is great that she had the opportunity to win a prize like
this at such a young age.”
As

presentation of an MD Barn will occur at the 2003 Scottsdale Arabian
Horse Show on Sunday, February 23.
