NEWS FROM THE 2001 COSEQUIN WINTER EQUESTRIAN FESTIVAL Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club JEFFREY WELLES WINS HIS 1ST OF THE SEASON WELLINGTON, FLORIDA -- February 11, 2001 - Jeffrey Welles of Pound Ridge, NY rode the 9-year-old Holsteiner, Riviera, to victory in the $75,000 Kilkenny Internationale Cup Sunday at the Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club. It was Welles' first grand prix victory of the season and he earned $22,500.The 38-year-old Welles, who was the first rider to go, bested a field of 45 entries by turning in the fastest double-clear rounds, including a jump-off time of 42.422 seconds. Chris Kappler of Pittstown, New Jersey was the only other rider to finish with double-clear rounds, finishing second in 44.322 seconds, almost two seconds behind Welles. The difficult first round saw 20 starters knock down at least one of the planks at jump 6 and 14 more receive faults on at least one leg of the triple jump finale. "The course was extremely tough," said Welles, "perhaps a little too tough. The triple was tough (because) there were big efforts before that so the horses were tired. He's (Arno Gego of Germany) a wonderful course designer & I'm not complaining because my horse did it." The spectators were treated to eight starters in the jump-off despite only five going clear in the first round. "After the thrill of going clean, I realized there was a chance someone with faults in the first round could beat me," Welles said. "That put a damper on things for a little while." The Cosequin Winter Equestrian Festival, which
continues through March 11, will feature the $75,000 Ford Idle Dice Classic on
