British
Horse Society makes further response to new Government
consultation document on vehicle off-road access
The
British Horse Society knows that riders who have to
dice with death on the roads feel strongly that they
should not have to worry about encountering motor
vehicles on public rights of way (PROW). However,
many such vehicles on PROW have private access rights
and, as the Society understands it, these rights would
not be removed by the proposed legislation.
|
For
most riders, the issue is more about damage to the surface
than the surprise or, occasionally, danger of meeting a
motor vehicle. It would appear that the majority of damage,
nationwide on all classes of PROW, derives from the exercise
of private rights during the course of necessary activities,
such as feeding winter stock, although there are some sites
where considerable nuisance is caused by a small minority
of the public.

Select
Sport Horse Sale
There
will be a unique opportunity this January to purchase a
quality sport horse just before the start of the Florida
winter circuit. On January 24th and 25th, the Ridge Farm
and Dobber Stables will present The Intercontinental Sport
Horse Sales at the Ridge Farm in Palm Beach Point East in
Wellington, Florida. This exceptional auction is fashioned
after the Holsteiner sales in Germany, and is a type of
sale seldom seen in the United States.
"This
is a really nice way to present high class horses,"
said Nona Garson, owner of the Ridge. "The auction
is coming at an opportune time, just at the beginning of
the Florida circuit. Buy your show horse at the auction
on Sunday and go to the horseshow on Wednesday."
The
horses will all be high-caliber sport horses, primarily
hunters and jumpers. This is a select sale. An elite panel
of horsemen will examine horses submitted for the auction.
They will select horses for the auction that satisfy their
standards for confirmation and performance. In addition,
a panel of veterinarians will pre-vet and x-ray all the
horses and reject any horses they judge unsuitable for the
discipline. People who want to have their own veterinarian
exam a horse can do so prior to the auction. Please

Family Banned for Life for Pony Cruelty
Today,
Wednesday 17 December, at Ely Magistrates Court, Sandra
Rose Loveridge 38, her husband George Robert Loveridge
37, and his father John William Smith, 71 of Littleport,
Cambridgeshire were found guilty of causing unnecessary
suffering to 2 ponies in their possession.
|
Mr
& Mrs Loveridge, of 31 Parsons Lane, Littleport, Ely,
and Mr John William Smith, who all pleaded not guilty to
the charges, were disqualified from keeping horses for life,
and ordered to pay £400 costs each. The Court placed
a confiscation order on the mare and foal that survived
because the defendants showed a complete lack of awareness
of the care and welfare that these ponies needed and no
remorse that their negligence had led to the death of one
of them.
At
the end of February this year ILPH Field Officer, Jonathan
(Jacko) Jackson was driving along the A10 at Littleport
when he saw some ponies in a field beside the road that
looked underweight. Please click

Breaking
Down Rural Business Barriers |
The
Country Land and Business Association (CLA) has written
to Chancellor Gordon Brown urging him to address inequalities
in the current tax system that force extra burdens onto
rural businesses.
CLA
Regional Director North, Douglas Chalmers says: "Diversification
into non-agricultural activities is essential for the survival
of many farm businesses and the growth of the rural economy.
But the distinctions between different types of operations
made by the current tax regime is a major hindrance to many
country businesses, which are becoming increasingly mixed
in nature."

Now For A Tasty Bird This Christmas
As
Christmas day fast approaches and our thoughts turn to preparing
the most important meal of the year, no festive plan would
be complete without the centrepiece of the British culinary
year, the turkey.
Though
British households will consume ten million turkeys this
Christmas, it may come as a surprise that the popular bird,
uniquely associated with British festive celebrations, originates
from America.
Several
stories claim to explain exactly how Britons began their
relationship with the characterful animal, but we do know
for certain that it first arrived in the 16th Century. The
turkey achieved a position of favour (and flavour!) with
loving support from Royalty such as George II, who kept
a flock at Richmond Park.

British
Horse Society issues advice over Strangles outbreak
The
British Horse Society has received reports of an outbreak
of Strangles in Cumbria. Cases have been unofficially
confirmed in the county.
Strangles
is an infection of the equine lymph glands. The swollen
glands can restrict the airways, hence the name 'strangles'.
It is caused by the bacterium Streptococcus Equi and
is highly infectious and contagious. The disease is
more prevalent and more serious than many horse owners
appreciate.
|
Whilst
Strangles is not a notifiable disease, it is strongly advised
that owners and carers should be responsible and inform
other horse owners of any suspected or confirmed cases as
a matter of courtesy to help prevent further spread of this
disease. The incubation period is usually about a week but
may take as long as two weeks before any clinical signs
are shown.

On The Hunt For Big Game In The Countryside
The
NFU is on the hunt for big game in the British countryside
with a survey of farmers to find out if there are wild cats
on the loose.
NFU's
members are being questioned about mysterious big cat sightings
through the NFU's membership magazine, British Farmer and
Grower, which has a circulation of 60,000.
It
is the first time Britain's farming community has been involved
in such a survey and stems from increasing reports of unidentifiable
puma-like creatures roaming the fields of Britain.
Farmers
are being asked to contact the British Big Cats Society,
which is already conducting research among the public about
sightings of unidentified creatures.

Miami
Projects and Debbie Stephens
WELLINGTON, FLORIDA-January 17th and 18th:
The Winter Equestrian Festival would like to announce on
the weekend of January 17th and 18th a fundraising event
to raise the awareness to cure paralysis. Proceeds from
the event will benefit the Nick Buoniconti Fund and benefit
The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. The Miami Project to
Cure Paralysis and Jackson Memorial Hospital will be working
with the 2004 Winter Equestrian Festival to provide proper
health care to our equestrians.
Last year Grand Prix rider Debbie Stephen's was critically
injured from a fall from her horse. During the first 48
hours of her injury Debbie received improper care which
could have ended her career as a professional athlete. Debbie
attributes her proper care and rehabilitation to The Miami
Project and Dr. Bartholomew Green, "It is long overdue
that the equestrian community has the accessibility to top
physicians after an injury to rehabilitate them and get
them back to their competitive state, and The Miami Project
will provide this for all of us." After Debbie's injury
last year she has dedicated herself to raise the awareness
for a cure for paralysis and the immediate need to bring
proper healthcare to the equestrian community nationwide,
"It is inevitable that we are going to get hurt, but
it is not inevitable that we need to be delayed by improper
care."

FEI
World Cup Dressage : CDI-W
Maastricht, Netherlands, 11-14th December 2003
Germany's
Heike Kemmer cemented her lead in the FEI World Cup
Western European dressage league table with a close
fought victory in Maastricht today. Less than one
point separated Kemmer and Bonaparte, a now nine-year-old
Hannoverian gelding found by her father Joachim as
a foal, from local heroine Anky van Grunsven riding
Gestion Salinero. This was the Olympic champion van
Grunsven's first international grand prix competition
in a year where most of her time has been spent recovering
from a serious thigh fracture sustained in a training
accident at home. With Isabell Werth, Kemmer's team
mate on the gold-medal winning German European squad,
in third place on her young talent Satchmo, the top
three riders performed at a very high level on exciting
young horses.
|
Ground
Jury President Stephen Clarke (GBR) commented: " The
top three were very close. Bonaparte showed beautiful basic
work with wonderful extended trots, but could show more
expression still in piaffe and passage. Anky and Salinero
showed brilliant interpretation of the music and Isabell's
Satchmo was so expressive - the test had real highlights."

Winter
Weight-Watching
While
some horses experience weight-loss during the winter,
have you found that your horse is actually gaining weight
over the same period or is still looking 'a bit too
well'? If so, you might like to consider that any of
the following reasons may be contributing to the problem:
"
Reduced workloads
" More time spent indoors
" A natural tendency to gain weight
" Being a 'good-doer'
" The feed provided is over-compensating for the
lack of grazing availableHowever,
a healthy weight can be achieved and maintained during
the winter period by providing your horse with restricted
amounts of forage topped up with a low calorie high-fibre
feed. This will supply all the essential nutrients your
horse requires, but avoid the higher levels of energy
(calories) found even in many 'low energy' mixes. A
balanced low starch diet is also beneficial for most
horses in the winter, and for stabled will help avoid
some of the problems that can occur as a result of spending
less time in the field . Please
