Anky
Van Grunsven - What a coup for Equus! |
Equus
2003 will amaze visitors with the programme for the Main
Arena; never before have so many top names from such a range
of disciplines been seen at the same event. Equus is making
giant steps forward in becoming a showcase for the sport,
providing the opportunity to see the leading riders with
fantastic clinics, displays and entertainment across all
areas of equestrianism.
The latest rider to confirm their appearance at Equus is
Olympic Gold Medallist 2000 and Rider of the Century 2000;
Anky van Grunsven.
Anky,
winner of an Olympic Gold Medal and 3 Olympic Silver medals
as well as being 5 times World Cup Winner, will be bringing
a selection of stars from her stable and showing the training
involved in producing a youngster to advanced level
"We are delighted that Anky will be joining us - we
consider it a great honour that she has chosen Equus as
her South of England venue this year, particularly as she
has only ever hosted one other clinic in the UK to date."
claims Event Director Sarah Cartwright.
An Evening with Anky takes place on Saturday 5th April and
completes the trio of evening clinics at Equus. Pippa Funnell,
Badminton Winner, and Eventing Olympic Team Silver Medallist
will host Thursday evening's clinic and the entertaining
Olympic showjumper, Geoff Billington with his infamous work
partner It's Otto who, recently retired, will no doubt hope
to steal the limelight on Friday.

Horse
Welfare Charity Outraged at Magistrates' Decision
"To return an animal to its abuser is another
welfare disaster waiting to happen."
Yesterday 11th December at Swaffham Magistrates Court
in Norfolk, Rita Jones of Diss, Norfolk was found
guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to Dolly a
black infoal mare in her possession and was fined
£50 and charged £60 costs.
|
Says
Jonathon Jackson (Jacko) a Field Officer for the ILPH (International
League for the Protection of Horses), "We are appalled
that the Court having found Jones guilty should see fit
to return the mare and foal to her. Understandably our stable
staff who nursed the mare when she came in to us, are absolutely
gutted."
In February this year, following a complaint to the ILPH,
Jacko was called to Mission Road, Diss where he found a
lice infested, severely emaciated mare on a tether. She
was described in court by veterinary surgeon, Andy Williamson,
as 'grossly emaciated and in a depressed and lethargic condition'.

Record
Crowds at National Horse Show Witness the Magic of the
Friesian Quadrille
Wellington,
Florida-- When the announcement was made that the prestigious
National Horse Show was moving from its home in Madison
Square Garden many enthusiasts wondered whether the
magic of the old event could be replicated in the new
locale of Florida. It appears that the doubters should
not have worried. More than 50,000 spectators witnessed
some of the best riding in the country from November
26- December 1. Among the attractions was "The
Romance of the Carousel," a quadrille of eight
Friesians and their riders that gave four performances
to music for the enthusiastic fans. |
"When
it was announced that the National Horse Show was moving
from Madison Square Garden to Wellington, I was ecstatic!"
said Shaana Pritchard, who approached Gene Mische, President
of Stadium Jumping Inc., about providing entertainment
for the 119th National Horse Show. "I remember the
excitement I had felt as a young girl each and every time
we would go to New York City and be part of the festivities
surrounding the horse show. I always dreamed of one day
riding at the Garden. That dream came true-- albeit many
years later, and in, of all places, Wellington, Florida."
Ms. Pritchard is a member of the United States Dressage
Federation Freestyle Committee and owner of Frieze Frame
Friesians. In just a few short weeks Ms. Pritchard put
together a group of eight riders and eight horses from
several states, designed the performances, and worked
with Equisong.com to provide a moving musical score for
the powerful black horses. "The troupe had never
before performed together," Ms. Pritchard said. "But
I had great confidence in my riders." Her confidence
was justified. The performances were met by cheering crowds
that came to their feet as the bejeweled horses performed
difficult maneuvers in unison including the 360-degree
pinwheel.

Morrisey
and Gay Win Show Jumping Hall of Fame Jumper Classic
Series Year-End Championship
|
Tampa, FLDecember 9, 2002In the first ever Show
Jumping Hall of Fame Jumper Classic Series year-end finals
held at the National Horse Show in Wellington, FL, Michael
Morrissey and Summer Gay emerged as the Junior and Amateur-Owner
Champions. Each bested a field of the nations top
riders and horses who had qualified for the Finals based
on their performances in the Series throughout the year.
Morrisey,
of Bradenton, FL, rode Eugene R. Misches Gera 28 to
the win by topping a starting field of 16 horse-and-rider
combinations in the $15,000 BET Show Jumping Hall of Fame
Junior Championship. Morrissey produced two clear rounds
on the day and crossed through the timers with the fastest
time in the jump-off of 42.470 seconds.
Only
four horse-and-rider combinations jumped clear over the
first round course, which was made up of twelve obstacles.
Morrissey and the brother-and-sister duo of Maggie and Charlie
Jayne were the only riders to qualify to ride over the shortened
jump-off course. Charlie Jayne also produced two clear rounds
on the day aboard Champion but his time of 43.905 seconds
put him in second place. Maggie Jayne aboard Kinda Blue
and Charlie Jayne aboard his other mount, Melbourne, each
dropped one rail in the jump-off to put them in third and
fourth place.

The
Abaco Wild Horse.
GREAT ABACO, BAHAMAS...Once,
they were a mighty herd, perhaps 200 strong: pinto,
bay and roan horses rippling through thousands of
acres of pine forest. They were as free as the sea
winds that blew across the island they had conquered.
Their
origins remained unclear until 1998. It was thought
that some of their ancestors came from domestic animals
brought by English Loyalists who abandoned North America
during the American Revolution. When some of the colonizing
attempts failed, the horses were turned loose and
left behind.
Others were thought to have come with the logging
operations that cleared Wilson city in the south of
Great Abaco and Norman's Castle in the north. And
these logging horses may have come from Cuba. When
the logging company clear-cut itself into oblivion,
the horses were abandoned.
|
|
In
1998 it was discovered that the horses probably are
Spanish Barbs. Pending DNA testing, it is 99% certain
that they are genetically pure - having been 'untampered'
with for over 250 years. The pine forests of Abaco
are something few visitors know exist.
In the
Bahamas, the Caribbean pines (Pinus caribaea), exist
only on Grand Bahama, Andros, Abaco and New Providence
Islands. On Abaco, the forests provided a home for
the tough, romantic and equally rare wild Spanish
Barb horses.

Why
Can't I Keep Good Employees?
Does
this sound familiar: "I have a small stable. Originally
I did all the work myself, but now that I have two small
kids I've hired instructors to help. I'm having a problem
with turnover with the instructors I've hired. Pay is not
the problem, as I pay quite well. One of the instructors
decided on another line of work, and another's husband was
transferred in his job. The parents of the children that
ride here want the consistency of one instructor for their
child. They've been getting upset with this turnover. Why
can't I keep good help?"
There
are several issues raised in this scenario, and no one quick
fix solution will do the trick here. Changes in operational
policy, employee relations, and customer service are at
issue. Employee relations are a multi-faceted topic in any
scenario. An examination of management basics sheds light
on this issue however.

The
Riding Tree: Coordination Of The Aids
WAVERLY, WV As we move up the riding tree, we learn
to relax on the horse, stay balanced and follow the
horse's motion. As we continue to develop our ability
to communicate more clearly with the horse, we learn
to apply the pressures of weight (seat), leg, and rein
aids to communicate to the horse the shape we would
like him to take. |
When
we first begin using these aids, we are aware of applying
them one at a time. Then we mentally group them into "recipes"
or "formulas" for particular shapes. We even illustrate
these groups of aids as pictograms to help us remember which
pressures create which shapes.
When we do these diagrams, however, we start to notice a
paradox. We use the same group of aids to ask the horse
to do different things. Mechanically speaking, for example,
we use the same set of aids to ask the horse to move on
a circle, turn in a corner, do a leg yield or do a turn
on the forehand.
Communicating to the horse involves much more than just
a mechanical application of a specific set of aids. That's
the beginning but if riders want to progress up the riding
tree from merely applying the aids to coordinating them,
they have do more that just use their aids in an "on"
or "off" mode. Coordinating the aids means applying
the right aids in the right sequence with the right degree
of pressure and with the right timing. Developing a feel
for this coordination requires some additional skills.
