Jersey Court Rejects As Frivolous USET's Motion To
Disqualify Attorney
|
After
hearing lengthy oral argument, the Superior Court of New
Jersey today denied the motion of the United States Equestrian
Team, seeking to disqualify the attorney representing Alan
Balch, who is challenging the validity of various corporate
actions taken by the USET in the fall of 2001. Judge Edmund
R. Bernhard also ruled that the motion of the USET was unsupported
by facts, was contrary to the law, and was frivolous. As
a result, he ordered that the USET and its attorneys must
pay sanctions to reimburse the legal fees incurred in opposing
their motion. Mr. Balch is the President of USA Equestrian,
the National Equestrian Federation of the United States,
which authorized Mr. Balch to file the New Jersey litigation.

A
Horse, Of Course
by Don Blazer
He's a wale of a horse, because he's not a Whale of
a horse, just a Waler.
A Waler is the national horse of Australia and derives
his name from his region of origin, New South Wales.
He is also known as the Australian Stock Horse.
Similar to the American Quarter Horse, he has an alert,
intelligent look, with a full eye, wide nostril and
broad forehead. He has a long, graceful neck, set well
on a sloping shoulder. He has a deep, wide chest, well-sprung
ribs, well-developed forearm, short, flat cannon bone
and strong, powerful hindquarters, well-muscled and
nicely rounded. |
= The
first horses were imported to Australia in 1795 and they
had their foundation in Dutch and Spanish blood, as well
as, Arab and Barb ancestors.
From these first horses came type selection-some were used
as saddle horses, some as cavalry horses, and some as racing
horses. (Racing was established in Australia in 1826.)
The Waler, which comes in a variety of conformation types,
gained international fame during World War I when the heaviest
type forged a legend for courage and stamina in handling
bulky artillery. His contribution to the war effort earned
him a place as one of the most famous horses within the
British Empire.
While the Waler may be the actual original Australian Stock
Horse, today's Australian Stock Horse horse is more compact
and well balanced. The early Waler showed a lot of ranginess
from the Thoroughbred and a lot of bulkiness from the draft
breeds.
The Australian Stock Horse was bred for work on a station
(ranch), capable of working in rough terrain and capable
of handling cattle and sheep.

The

Event
Director, Bill Henson, who will travel to Maastricht show

special. The public vote in a different way, with their

Irish
Draught Horse Society revamps site
The
Irish Draught Horse Society of New Zealand has made a fresh
start online with a brand-new website showcasing the breed.
One of the original New Zealand equine organisations to
take to the Internet, the society recently revamped its
website to include more news, information, and services
to members and visitors. The revamped site, at www.irishhorse.org.nz,
was designed by equine web design specialists Horsetalk,
and is also hosted by Horsetalk.
Breeders
also now have an opportunity to have a page within the site,
which is proving an affordable way for those with smaller
studs to have an online presence, says society president
Colin Price. "Our new site offers more possibilities
for the society and our breeders to promote their horses,
and the breed," he says. "Breeders can have their
own sites or pages within our site, and we are now also
offering a sales section, and an area for form downloads."
News
from the society and beyond is updated on the site after
each newsletter is produced, and back copies of the newsletter
will be available.

Breaking Attendance At The 119th National Horse Show
In Wellington
Wellington,
Florida --- December 2, 2002 --- After being held indoors
for 118 years at Madison Square Garden (with the exception
of six years at the Meadowlands in New Jersey), The
National Horse Show concluded its 119th year yesterday
at the spacious, outdoor show grounds of The Palm Beach
Polo Equestrian Club in Wellington, Florida. The National,
founded in 1883, is the oldest and most prestigious
horse show in the U.S., bringing together the best horses
and riders in the country. |
During the last six years, attendance at the Madison Square
Garden location had dramatically deteriorated, particularly
after 9/11. The social cachet that had once been associated
with the show had for some reason begun to lose its luster.
Add to that the inability to secure a long-term, economically
feasible contract with the Garden, and, by the spring of
2002, the continuing existence of The National was in jeopardy.
To
the rescue, Gene Mische, Chairman of The National as well
as Chairman of Stadium Jumping, Inc. -- Mr. Mische made
the dramatic decision to move The National to an outdoor
venue, far away from the New York metropolitan area, and
to break with the shows longstanding tradition.
While
there were skeptics, the skeptics have now been proved wrong.
The crowds came back, the social set was out in full force
and the horses and riders were shown at their best in the
flawless show rings of The Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club.

TopSpec
Launch New BloodStock Feed Balancer
TOPSPEC
Equine has launched a new feed balancer to help provide
optimum nutrition for thoroughbred broodmares, stallions,
foals and youngstock.
TopSpec
BloodStock feed balancer is formulated to the best
possible specifications, using the highest quality
ingredients.
It
contains optimum amounts of all the micronutrients
needed to complement feed intake and allow bloodstock
to reach their maximum potential.
TopSpec Bloodstock improves nutrient availability
in two ways:
Firstly
the minerals, vitamins, trace-elements and amino acids
balance hay (or haylage) and straights, allowing them
to be utilised more efficiently.
Secondly
the pure yeast improves the digestibility of fibre
in the hindgut. These facts mean that horses can receive
optimum nutrition from reduced levels of hard feed,
with many resulting benefits.

WELLINGTON,

outdueled 1992 individual bronze medalist Norman Dello
Joio to capture first place in the $100,000 National
Horse Show Jumper Championship on the final day of the
119th annual National Horse Show Sunday at the Palm
Beach Polo Equestrian Club.
Hough, a member of the 2000 U.S. Olympic team, maneuvered
Clasiko, a 12-year-old brown Holsteiner gelding, to
his first grand prix victory, going clear in the jump-off
round in 42.08 seconds. Dello Joio, aboard Glasgow,
a 12-year-old chesatnut warmblood gelding, knocked down
the fourth fence in the jump-off and also had four time
faults, finishing in 48.98 seconds.
Its very difficult going first in a two-horse
jump-off, especially with Norman behind you, said
Hough, who won last years event aboard Windy City.
Clasiko is not a very fast horse, but hes
been going great. I think hes just coming into
his own.

Wellington,
Florida---December 2, 2002---The 119th National Horse
Show, held for the first time at The Palm Beach Polo
Equestrian Club in Wellington, Florida, concluded yesterday.
The National, founded in 1883 by members of New Yorks
Social Register, traditionally brings together the best
horses and riders in the U. S. competing for some of
the most prestigious and lucrative prizes in the equestrian
world. |
More than 57,000 spectators jammed the stands and enjoyed

a successful endeavor.
But
what was the equestrian in-crowd up to during those six

while watching the competition, at The Diamond Horseshoe
Club Tent, overlooking The Internationale Arena. An elaborate
continental breakfast started each day off at 8am, with
lunch and beverages served beginning at 11:30am --- all
with proper linens, china, crystal and silverware. The Diamond

A
Horse, Of Course
by Don Blazer
New Year's resolutions are always made with good intentions.
I recall my mother told me the road to (you know where)
was paved with good intentions.
The problem seems to be we are always making these resolutions
to "improve ourselves." It's not a selfish
thing; we generally want to improve ourselves in a way
to benefit others. Our intentions are good, but they
usually don't get much done.
Well, this year I'm recommending a "class action"
set of New Year's resolutions not to improve ourselves,
but to improve things for our horses. Maybe this way
we can get something done.
Don't panic; it isn't going to be a lot of work. You
aren't going to have to give up anything---well, maybe
a little time, maybe a little effort. What I want our
class action resolutions to do is change the way we
think-just a little bit-about our horses.

Mixed
courses for horses: research shows the benefits of
a varied diet in stables
Providing
stabled horses with a range of forages could significantly
reduce abnormal behaviour patterns, according to animal
behaviour experts at the University of Southampton.
In
collaboration with the WALTHAM Equine Studies Group,
based in Leicestershire, the Southampton team has
been investigating the link between diet and behaviour
in stabled horses. Their findings, published the Equine
Veterinary Journal, show that when provided with a
variety of forages to choose from, stabled horses
exhibited less 'abnormal' and potentially harmful
behaviour.
|
The
research is of particular importance to trainers of racehorses,
eventers, dressage horses, and other competition horses,
which necessarily often have restricted access to pasture,
and which have already been identified as being at risk
of developing behaviour problems.
Research
leader, Dr Deborah Goodwin, lecturer in Applied Animal Behaviour
at University of Southampton New College, explains: 'Unlike
horses at pasture which have access to a variety of grasses
and other plants, many stabled horses have highly restricted
diets, often with only one or two foods available to them
at a time. Previous studies have linked this to changes
in patterns of behaviour, including a tendency for horses
to eat their straw bed, a habit that can lead to colic,
which is a potentially fatal condition.

Books
do help
The proof they say, is in the pudding.
In this case, the proof is in the AQHA Reserve World Championship
trophy. And that puddin' is pretty tasty.
First Rate Mos, pictured as a three-year-old in training
in the book Natural Western Riding by Don Blazer and Cathy
Hanson, won the Junior Trail Horse title at the 2002 AQHA
World show in Oklahoma City.
The training techniques offered in the book, without a doubt,
get results.
First Rate Mos is owned by Fay Vonada and was ridden in
the championship performance by Quarter Horse trainer Cherie
Vonada. Cherie designed the practice trail horse courses
included in the book.
