Award Winning Boots are Re-launched!
Armadillo's Award-Winning Invotec Competition Boots have undergone an innovative re-design. Problems manufacturing in this country meant that Armadillo had to search for a new company that had the capability to produce top of the range, technical products. Now produced in Vienna, Armadillo's Invotec Competition Boots are made by the same company that produces components for Prada shoes, Head and Adidas. The excellent quality that this factory produces is synonymous with all Armadillo products.
These incredibly protective boots have been re-designed to be almost completely impact-proof. As before, Armadillo's Invotec Competition boots absorb an incredible 99% of the shock from any impact, and are still the only boots on the market to use a material that is CE approved. The inner layer, Astrosorb, is European Certified to protect against impact on limbs of motorcyclists.

Now slightly more rigid than before, the Invotec Competition boots sport a highly technologically advanced outer layer. Scientifically designed to protect against penetration from knives, this material has been applied to Armadillo's Invotec Range ensuring that almost any impact will not penetrate the boot.

Successful AGM For BETA
THIS year's BETA AGM was well attended with more than 40 members travelling to Saddler's Hall in London.
BETA president Sir Adam Butler welcomed everyone before Chairman Rob Welch updated members of the activities of the last 12 months.
Said Mr Welch: "It is pleasing to report that the membership of the association continues to grow thanks to the unstinting efforts of our Field Officers.
"For the second year running over 100 new companies were offered membership of the association with particular growth in retail and trade, bringing the total membership to date of nearly 700 for the first time in BETA's history.

"BETA is undoubtedly becoming truly representative of the total spectrum of equestrian businesses. BETA is considered to be the business association for the equestrian sector and the increased interest in membership from a wider range of businesses involved in the industry is reflective of this.
"As well as being a focus for new companies entering the industry, other areas showing growth are the equine tourism sector and services sector, including education."

Molly Key wins new Equissage Young Achievement Award
AFTER an exceptional season, 18-year-old Molly Key from Chiddingfold in Surrey was honoured with the new Equissage Young Achievement Award at the recent Seahorse Ball at the South of England Showground, Ardingly, West Sussex.
The prestigious Young Achievement Award, open to all South East eventers aged 25 and under, is being supported by well known equine physiotherapy experts Equissage, and Molly received a week's training with top event rider Tiny Clapham and the Equissage Trophy from Kim Smith-Bingham.
Molly Key was chosen by the South East Eventers League's advisors, who had been watching competitors throughout the season to find the rider they felt was most deserving of the Equissage Young Achievement Award.
She not only lifted two titles with Charlwood owner Clare Heron's 11-year-old grey gelding Jesters Quest in the S.E.E.L Awards - the Coakham Masters Juniors and the Hungry Horse Surrey Riders ahead of Pippa Funnell - but won two major national events at the end of the season.

Although Molly and Jesters Quest narrowly missed making the British team for the European Junior Championships, they went on to win the Jumpers Horseline Junior Regional Novice Championships at Weston Park one star three-day, and two weeks later, Molly and her seven-year-old Double Act won at Aldon Two-Day.

All competitors coped admirably in completing these tasks under the unrelenting gaze of judges Ian Stark, Richard Davison and Sarah Hamlyn, with the added pressure of a huge audience of visitors.

Dances With Horses Update
The fifth annual Wild Horse Workshop took place at the end of last month in Lawrence, Kansas. It was deemed a raging success with 109 horses and burros adopted. There were 65 participants and 8 clinicians all interacting with each other and the horses for five very full days.
This interesting and innovative venue is unlike any I’ve ever seen. Each clinician has a different slant/approach to the gentling of wild horses. The common denominator is using least resistance methods and attempting to stress the horses as little as possible. Sometimes it works beautifully. Sometime it doesn’t. Gentling absolute wild horses is tricky to say the least. The word ‘feel’ cannot be underestimated.
The techniques are as varied as the horses including: round penning, clicker training, human round pen or Navajo Ring, T-touch, and my favorite, the bamboo pole, John Sharp’s gift to wild horses. For an in-depth look at the past workshop click this link: www.horsewhisperer.com/training_wild_horses.htm
I strongly encourage those interested in the future Wild Horse Workshops to consider joining us for a week you’ll never forget. Next year’s location is yet to be announced.

horse New Airflex Saddle Pad From Comfort Zone
MAKING sure your horse or pony is in total comfort when being ridden, brings peace of mind and confidence that they can work to the best of their ability.
And thanks to Comfort Zone Equestrian, help is now on hand with the launch of the revolutionary new Airflex Saddle Pad which allows total freedom and flexibility for the horse.
Following in depth research and development the Airflex Pad is made from Eva Modified Closed Cell Polyethelene.
Constructed from small hexagonal pads, locked into a mesh, these move with the horses muscle structure, removing sheer pressure and dispersing direct pressure on the back.
The Airflex Pad is totally breathable and lightweight making it very popular with racing yards and trainers. It is washable at 40 C, and has a wool under layer for air flow and total comfort. The pad is also useful for cold backed horses as it provides a less rigid feel to the horse's back.
Used and endorsed by showjumper Billy Twomey and event rider Terry Boon, the Airflex Pad is proving hugely popular in all disciplines.

Summer Of Miracles
By: Emily Lineberger Bridges

Auja Maria presented us with a beautiful dark bay filly on June 22, 1999, after a pregnancy filled with anxiety. Maria is a multiple ovulating mare, one that releases two follicles each cycle. The first attempt at breeding resulted in an ultrasound reading at sixteen days of twins. While I was concerned, having read a lot about the perils of equine twinning, the vet advised that we should not take action until the second ultrasound at 30 days. The test at that time showed no babies. We were back to square one.
The next cycle Maria was bred again with the same initial results. We held our collective breaths and waited until the 30th day. She still carried both embryos, so the vet pinched one. I joked about making darn sure the vet kept the filly alive, but we would have been happy with either. After checking hormone levels, the vet said that Maria stood as good a chance as any other mare of carrying to full term. Since this would be her first pregnancy, we had no foaling history with which to compare this one. Through the winter and spring months, we waited, growing more excited each day.
We were overjoyed with the birth of the little filly that we had waited for with such anticipation. We named her Maria's Summer Miracle, because she was a miracle in so many ways. This filly was everything we had hoped for. She was the image of her mother, and the breeder even remarked that although the sire had a star, blaze and strip, Summer was the only foal that he had not marked. She not only inherited her mother's good looks, she also was blessed with her disposition. Summer was imprinted with her mother standing by, without any restraint. That is typical of Maria - always trusting that her people will do the right thing
When Summer was two months old, I decided to let her experience life with the other horses in the big pasture. Up until that time, she had grazed beside her mother and two other horses in a smaller pasture. For several weeks, the days were without incident, and I felt especially content as I drove away one sunny morning for a trip to the grocery store and post office.
I returned about one and one-half hours later and did not go immediately to check on Summer on her first day in the big pasture. I could see all the horses from my kitchen door and they were quietly grazing. It was about an hour before I grabbed carrots for the grownups and headed up the hill.
As I approached, I noticed blood on Summer's leg. I began to move faster toward her and was sickened at what I saw - most of the skin on her forehead hung loosely down between her eyes and blood was oozing. Trying to remain calm, I headed back to the barn as fast as I could. Maria, being the obedient horse that she is, followed along behind me with Summer by her side.

Slinging away the blues.
Using a sling to mend a broken leg proves uncommon but successful
Fracture repair in horses can be a frustrating experience. Long term use of a full body sling for fracture repair is unusual as very few horses can adapt to it. But one tenacious patient conquered a potentially fatal fracture with the help of her devoted owners, top-notch surgeons, and expert post-operative care-while slung from the ceiling for three-and-a half months!
This was the case of Kyra, a 20- month-old Trakhaner filly, who suffered a broken leg after a paddock accident in January 2002. She was brought to the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) in Guelph where a team led by surgeon Dr. Antonio Cruz treated her.
"The fracture was a challenging one to repair because it was very close to the knee and was displaced and had many fragments," said Dr. Cruz.
After a lengthy discussion with the surgical team, owners Kevlynn and Barb Sacrey of Waterloo decided to proceed with a transfixation cast, a technique that involves steel pins being placed side to side above the fracture site and incorporated into a whole leg cast.
