horse New Priory Stud Updates

Chairman is currently in Worldwide Quarantine for collection of frozen semen at West Kington. His first UK foals were born in 99 and are looking very good potential sporthorses at the moment. One of his foals out of a Zangersheide mare has been given the Z prefix by Leon Melchior which is a great honour - could it be because Chairman beat a couple of Z stallions at Zwolle? - and we are thrilled as it amounts to another approval by another studbook! Is currently being ridden everyday in case William needs him to fill in a slot, but I would like another shot at the Sunshine Tour with him.

Vechta's first crop of UK foals came out really well this year, particularly to Dutch and Irish Mares. Vechta himself did really well in his first Hickstead Derby for 8 faults, which in any other year would have got him 3rd or 4th place. Currently he has just returned from a very good Nations Cup performance - clear and 4 - in Rome. He will be going into Worldwide quarantine at West Kington at the end of the month, returning to World Cup and Nations Cup classes in the New Year.

Marsoom is at home, and has been selected to parade at the National Stud - one of only 12 stallions to be so honoured - so we will start him with some exercise just as soon as we have a spare minute. Incidentally at our show I was very impressed with his ability to refine the heavier mare and improve on the dam, which is great because you never really know until you see the results trotting round the arena.

Dundee is currently with William Funnel's work rider and came second in his first show, with five enquiries for next season as a result. We will be short of a horse to ride out with the youngsters and stallions and Malcolm and I just tried to buy back a five year old Dundee son currently with Charlotte Keevil for an owner, but when I rang and asked they would not sell. Good for them but bad for us!!! I am still looking!

Quo Vadis first UK crop this year was a revelation, I thought they would just be 'jumpers' but he has gone very well on a variety of mares, heavy and medium and light, and really looks to have produced an eventer / green hunter type with my triple graded TB mare. And his filly foal out of Celia Clarke's Tacta won the filly foal class at our show. - that was definitely the icing on the cake. We are just about to start work with him, and when William takes Vechta to West Kington we may 'hitch a lift' for Quo Vadis on the backhome journey. He will be aimed at a few indoor shows this winter prior to the 2001 stud season.

Cevin Z is really settling to his job with William Funnell and is being prepared for the second part of his grading with SHB(GB), he is getting his act together under saddle and over a few poles and currently establishing the canter. Our fingers are crossed for part 2!

Currently we have a couple of really good prospects in for clients for backing and breaking, a Carousel gelding destined for dressage and a Rebel Z 3yr old stallion destined for jumping. We have weaned Chase the Dream, Quand Meme, Charismatic, Que Sera, Tallents Quest, and Casablanca, - only Susie Quatro and Champion de Houley to go.

Monday Morning is the only 3yr old left and she is with Celia Gadd, she was backed in the spring and turned away, and has just come in again to prepare for the young event horse classes - sort of green hunter equivalent - in the spring/early summer. The 99's will come in for a little bit more handling and start very quietly on the long reins around Christmas starting with Marseillaise by Marsoom.
