FEI
World Cup Jumps Into Action!
Helsinki
in Finland plays host to the opening leg of the Western
European League 2003/2004 FEI World Cup Jumping season
on Sunday 19 October.
The
series, first staged in 1978, will be celebrating
its 26th year but without the guiding hand of long-time
Director, Max Ammann, who stepped aside after producing
the latest World Cup Media Guide which will be in
circulation within the next few weeks.
So
its going to be an historic new beginning this season,
although Maxs tremendous legacy lives on.
For
the first time ever the final will be staged in Italy
when Milans Fila-Forum opens its doors
from 21 to 25 April 2004 but, before that, there will
be 14 tough qualifying rounds

Inaugural
Leinster Show Jumping Championship Series
Following
the most successful ever summer league in fourteen years,
the show-jumping calendar for the remainder of the season
has moved indoors to the 'Kathleen Flannelly Memorial
Arena at Kill International Equestrian Centre. |
Last Wednesday saw the first ever show-jumping competition
in the fantastic new arena, which was purpose built for
the Special Olympic World Summer Games in June. Indeed,
following the games the newly developed complex received
rave reviews, and was hailed as the best ever venue that
the games had ever seen. The arena itself is worth a visit,
it has a very warm feeling to it, it's a great size to compete
in, and has excellent footing, Cushion Track Supreme (Equestrian
Surfaces), which has been used at the World Cup Show jumping
finals in Las Vegas and The Horse of the Year Show.
"Last
June was a very special time at Kill and it has been very
rewarding to have received so many compliments about the
games and the centres' facilities. I even received a letter
from Special Olympics H.Q.s in Washington hailing 'the venue
and competition were the best ever', Fintan proudly says.

Bob
Jeffreys Partnership Training for Horse & Rider
October
2003 E-Newsletter
TEACHING THE TURN ON THE FOREHAND By Bob Jeffreys
Wouldnt
you like to be able to have your horses hindquarters
move as the front end stand still? This is an easy and fun
lesson to teach your horse and most of them can learn it
in less than two hours. As a movement, it is not only impressive,
but a very useful one, particularly in trail classes.
Since
horses must be taught to move away from pressure (this is
not something they do naturally), I start the lesson by
teaching the horse to move his hindquarters to either the
left or the right from the reins. This way I have a motivator
(the bit) to encourage the horse to seek the correct response.
Later on Ill put a cue spot on the horse where my
heel or spur will touch him to signal the turn on the forehand.

Corral
Kit Solves Lisa's Dilemma
When
Lisa Hofert moved house this year her horse was no doubt
delighted, because the new home came with a 3½
acre paddock. All very good, you might think, but she
faced a problem, which was how to keep her horse in
the paddock?
Well
Lisas problems have been solved, thanks to Overland
Marketing (the specialist equestrian distributor) and
the R&R Country Store at Hemingbrough, near Selby,
who ran a competition for an electric fencing kit
and Lisa won it.
A
delighted Lisa said: Ive never won anything
in my life before, but - as you do - I entered the competition
anyway, and I was so thrilled when R&R told me Id
won this prize its just what I need.
Sue
Moxon of R&R said: Were really pleased
that Lisa won our competition: weve only been
stocking the Corral
kit since April, but theyre already really popular
with our customers.

ESS
Bring Expertise To British Equine Event
The
UK's leading specialist Equestrian breakdown service provider,
Equestrian Support Services (ESS) is bringing its expertise
to this year's British Equine Event at Stoneleigh Park.
Accidents
and breakdowns involving horse boxes or trailers are unfortunately
all too common. It is for this reason that ESS will be holding
its own Trailer Trials at this year's event. ESS is inviting
visitors to visit its outdoor arena in order to test their
knowledge and skills against the clock in a 4x4 with trailer,
manoeuvring through a course which has been specially designed
by BSM towing instructors.
The event is designed to teach visitors about the risks
involved in towing, the precautions to take and how to minimise
the risk of an accident or breakdown on the road. Supported
by motoring organisation RAC, the trials are the first of
their kind and ESS is hoping that as well as being a fun
experience, they will draw drivers' attention to the many,
yet often forgotten risks of travelling with a horse box
or trailer.

The
Highland Pony
The
Highland is the largest of the three Scottish native
breeds of pony, reaching a maximum of 14.2hh (148cms)
and a modern adult pony can weigh as much as 55kg. Its
original environment of the Scottish Highlands and Islands,
to which it is well adapted, has made it a hardy, sure-footed
animal. The island ponies, because of their harsher
environment tended to be smaller and lighter boned than
their mainland relations. Its winter coat is thick and
insulating and enables it to live outside in all weathers.
It has a profuse, silky mane and tail and feathering
on the legs. The summer coat is smooth. |
Its
strength, sure-footedness and equable temperament made it
an invaluable workhorse for the crofters of Scotland who
used the Highland as a multi-purpose
animal - for ploughing, forestry, riding and haulage. The
sporting estates found the Highland useful for bringing
deer and game from the hill and many modern day estates
have reverted to the ponies as being more environmentally
friendly than 4x4 vehicles. In the First World War, the
Lovat Scouts used Highlands as army mounts and they were
also used by the military in the Boer War. With the advent
of pony trekking in Scotland in 1955, the Highland came
into its own and the breed became more widely known. Nowadays,
the Highland makes an excellent family pony, as it is a
good all-rounder and will turn a hoof to riding, driving,
dressage, jumping, cross country and long distance riding
as well as being extensively used for RDA (Riding for the
Disabled) work. Highlands are able to carry an adult of
up to 15 stones in weight. In the Mountain and Moorland
Ridden Pony of the Year at Olympia,Highlands were champion
and reserve in 1999.

Overcoming
Riding Fears
WAVERLY,
WV--Anyone who has ridden for any length of time would
be dishonest if they told you they have never felt fear.
If you have any common sense at all, you should have
a certain level of "healthy fear" whenever
you get on a new horse. Callit "respect" if
you prefer, but there is always an awareness that the
1000-pounds or so of bone and muscle you are sitting
on is, physically, more powerful than you
are. |
Horses
can jump sideways in the blink of an eye, rear, buck, or
reach speeds over 25 miles per hour in a matter of seconds.
They are also capable of using that physical power to perform
incredible athletic feats like jumping, dressage, cutting,
or reining. Our desire to become partners with our horses
in those athletic endeavors makes us willing to take the
risk of being thrown off or finding ourselves on a panicked
runaway.

Lennon
Wins Again For Ireland
For
the second day running Ireland's Dermott Lennon has
tasted victory in the first ever show jumping extravaganza
to be held at the new Olympic Equestrian Center in
Athens, which will be the scene of next year's equestrian
events at the Olympic Games.
Having
taken the Pegasus Speed Stakes on 'I Caesar' yesterday,
the pair were in sparkling form again this morning
(Saturday) to raise the Irish colours by capturing
the Philippos Classic in the sweltering Greek capital.
The
current World Number 1 Individual Rider, Lennon has
clearly shrugged off the injury that had plagued him
since winning the World Individual Crown in Jerez
in 2001 - the first Irish rider ever to hold this
title.
