FEI World Breeding Jumping Championships for Young Horses 2001

Breeders-show of superlatives

The FEI World Breeding Jumping Championships for Young Horses again promises to become a show of superlatives. For four days domain Zangersheide will be the center of sport and breeding, a fascinating combination as nowhere else highlighted during CSI-YH Zangersheide. With the Grand Prix for licensed stallions (finals of the Sires of the World series), the stallion selection of Studbook Zangersheide (on Thursday and Friday) and the Studbook auction of foals and 3-yr-olds (on Friday-night) this last summer weekend will once again offer a complete breeder’s festival.

The regular programme has only been marginally changed - a thing once proved effective needs little adaption. Until the circumstances demand, which is not the case. In the course of its eight years’ existence the concept has, after all, sufficiently crystallized out and the organisation committee and the regular crowd of helpers have learnt to act in harmony. Actually, there can only be one false note, and that is the weather.

Super premiums

At the super show you find super prizes. The ‘normal’ prize monies in total amount to almost 100,000 Euro plus 10 percent in breeders premiums. Added to these are the three super premiums of US$ 10,000 each, in total 33,964 Euro, for the breeders of the 5-, 6- and 7-years old World Champions, plus the three super premiums of 5,000, 3,000 and 2,000 Euro respectively for the breeders of the three best-placed stallions in the Sires of the World competition 2000/2001.

The six breeders who are fortunate enough to find that their breeding product wins the title of World Champion or is one of the best three of the Sires of the World have to be present in person to receive the super premiums at the prize award (see time schedule). It is the task of the various studbooks to make sure that the fortunate breeders, if not present, arrive in time.

Wild cards

The starting lists of CSI-YH Zangersheide consist for 20 percent of wild cards. The need for these special starting licences exists because national sport federations only enter horses born in the relevant country and there registered with a studbook. The result of this policy strongly recommended by the WBFSH is that some good horses do not get a chance to qualify. Often these are extremely good horses, for they were not for nothing sold abroad at an early age already. But they do not meet the WBFSH requirement that they must be born and registered in the same country for which their rider is starting. This flaw can only be corrected by means of wild cards. The many horses that were allowed to come to the finals with a wild card and there managed to finish in high places have proved the value of this alternative system.
