Sixty-Four People Go Steeple Chasing In The Centre Of Dublin
Hunt Chase 10 & 11 August 2002

Sixteen teams from registered hunt clubs around Ireland will compete in the Hunt Chase on the afternoons of Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 August during the 2002 Kerrygold Horse Show.
The Hunt Chase is the fastest, most exciting and crowd pleasing event on the Main Arena at the Show. Divots fly, hooves thunder, and adrenaline pumps in this high-speed relay knock-out event.
All the riders are amateur riders and no current competition riders are able to take part. Each team consists of four members of the registered hunt club. Rules require one rider to be a female and another to be a male of fourteen stone or heavier.
Two identical courses are built on the Main Arena, one course mirroring the other. Fences are built solid like obstacles the rider and horse would encounter in the country i.e. logs, brush fences, gorse hedges and bank and water. At the signal, two teams jump head-to-head, each rider passing a riding crop to the next rider in the team before they can start the course. The winning team is the last rider who crosses the finish line first. The winners progress to the next round. No jumping penalties are incurred, however the rider must successfully negotiate each obstacle.

Animal Welfare Groups Join Forces To Improve Livery Yards
The British Horse Society to administer voluntary scheme
Horse vets and leading equine welfare groups have joined forces to ask livery yards throughout the country to join a voluntary approvals and registration scheme designed to improve and standardise conditions for horses and ponies.
It will be administered by The British Horse Society (BHS) and supported by the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA), the International League for the Protection of Horses (ILPH), the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) and the Home of Rest for Horses. The scheme was launched at the Golden Jubilee Royal International Horse Show on July 26.
The British Horse Society Livery Yard Approval Scheme was devised after veterinary surgeons became concerned about welfare conditions in many of the yards they visited. "The bulk of our concerns were not about outright cruelty but in most cases centred on the way the animals were kept by often inexperienced owners," said BEVA information officer Lesley Barwise-Munro.

"What's your sign?" I heard Walter ask Katy. Katy is the filly who now lives in the stall right next to Walter.I knew I had to go to Walter's rescue. I rushed into his stall, pushed him into the corner farthest from Katy's wall and tried to warn him. "That's one of the oldest and worst pickup lines ever used," I whispered to Walter.
"A thoroughly modern filly won't be impressed," I said. "You'll have to come up with something better than that."
"A lot you know," he countered. "It just so happens she is Aquarius."
"Well, then, she might be impressed," I conceded. "Aquarius is an air sign and Aquarian fillies are often airheads," I reported.
"Careful how you speak about the filly I may just love."
"Love?" I questioned. "You don't even know her. I grant you, she's cute. But if you think an Aquarius is the filly for you, you definitely don't know much about astrology or the personalities of the signs."

2002 Hampton Classic Poster Captures Spirit of Horse Show
Artist/Designer Nick Gamarello Continues 25-Year Tradition
BRIDGEHAMPTON, NY—July 30, 2002—Artist and designer Nicholas Gamarello has created a classic, timeless look for the poster for the 2002 Hampton Classic Horse Show. The poster depicts an elegant woman holding two Thoroughbred horses—it might have been painted a minute ago … or a half-century ago.
Since 1977, the Hampton Classic’s art poster series has included images of a diverse group of paintings and drawings of some of the country’s leading equestrian artists. Avid collectors have snapped up signed editions of the annual posters by artists such as Paul Davis, Henry Koehler, Nina Duran, and Mickey Paraskevas.Gamarello’s 2002 poster features a full-color painting of a woman in hunting clothes holding two Thoroughbreds. The painting is surrounded by a wide border decorated with a variety of pencil sketches reflecting scenes at the show.
“I was trying to capture a timeless image that expresses the bond between horse and rider, people and animals,” said Gamarello, Vice President and Design Director at John B. Stetson, the hat and clothing manufacturer. “Even when I try to paint a contemporary subject, it has the influence of another time because I use the techniques of another time.”

Anyone for elephant polo?
Bangkok, 23rd July 2002 -- The ancient sport of Elephant Polo is being revived once again this year when the second King's Cup Elephant Polo Tournament takes place in Thailand's seaside resort of Hua Hin from 17th to 22nd September, thanks to an Englishman, a Scotsman and a Swede.
Polo playing Englishman Jim Edwards and Scotsman James Mann-Clark resurrected the idea of elephant polo in 1982, but it was Christopher Stafford, a Swedish polo player and general manager of Hua Hin's Anantara Resort and Spa, who brought the tournament to Thailand for the first time last year.
Played according to World Elephant Polo Association (WEPA) rules, the Hua Hin tournament, will feature teams from Nepal, Sri Lanka, Australia, Singapore, Dubai, Thailand with top players from Argentina, Germany, UK, US and the nation countries taking part. The tournament is supported by the Tourism Authority of Thailand and the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre (Forest Industry Organisation).
Elephant Polo is played with two teams of three elephants and two 'chukkas' of ten minutes playing time. Each elephant carries a polo player and a mahout. While the mahout directs the elephant using his voice, hands, feet and goads, the game's umpire sits and oversees the play from a wooden howdah on the back of the largest elephant.
The majority of the players are keen horse polo players. However, "being adept at swinging a polo stick on a 40 mph galloping horse is scant preparation for sitting atop a two and a half metre elephant moving at 15 mph whilst trying to knock a regular sized polo ball with an elongated polo stick", comments tournament organiser, Christopher Stafford.

horse David Raposa and Master Man Score In $75,000 Avis Grand Prix
A field of twenty-five horses contested the featured class on Sunday in Ellenville, NY. This was the AVIS Grand Prix, the fourth in the series presented by Horse Shows In The Sun for the 2002 season. Course designer Jerry Dougherty was responsible for building a fair and challenging course that would meet the stringent requirements for a $75,000 Grand Prix competition at the national level.
The third horse to perform was last week's Grand Prix winner, Everest ridden by Mario Deslauriers. The pair toured the course in 89 seconds, well within the time allowed of 97 seconds, and they had just one rail down at fence 4B. The very next horse to compete was Altair, ridden by Beth Underhill. They had no jumping faults and just one-quarter time fault for exceeding the time allowed by less than one-half second. Early in the going, and based on these two performances, it looked as though the course would produce several clear rounds within the time allowed.

Avolio, chairman of the IVC organizing committee. “It was good for everyone to come to the United States and see we have quality horses and quality riders in our programs for disabled riders. I’ve done competitions for disabled riders for 10 years, and I am always thrilled by the skills and abilities of these riders. They are outstanding.”

Riders from Canada, Germany, Great Britain, Israel, Japan, and the United States competed in team and individual events at the IVC, which is approved and recognized by the International Paralympic Equestrian Committee (I.P.E.C.). Although the dressage tests at the IVC are written specifically for riders with disabilities, they include movements equal to USA Equestrian fourth level tests for sighted, able-bodied riders.
The only concession to the riders with vision handicaps is the use of "living letters," trained volunteers who call out their assigned letter so that the riders are able to visualize where they are in the dressage arena.

Team Penning is Horse Industry’s New Cash Cow
In the game of team penning,, it could be the game of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?”
(Wichita Falls, Texas) – Sounds simple. With two other partners, go into a herd of 30 cattle, cut out three with the same number on their backs and get them into a pen at the opposite end of the arena in less than sixty seconds. So simple, in fact, that when the United States Team Penning Association (USTPA) began in 1993, the sport took off with rapidly growing participation and interest. Before long, it was common place to see team penners competing for purses of $50,000 or more – practically unheard of in weekend horse competitions.

Chris Kappler Wins $175,000 Cargill Grand Prix of the United States, Presented by HBO To Close 2002 Oaks Blenheim International CSI-A
San Juan Capistrano, CA—July 28, 2002—Chris Kappler of Flemington, NJ won the $175,000 Cargill Grand Prix of the United States, Presented by HBO, to close the 2002 Oaks Blenheim International CSI-A.
Kappler won in dramatic fashion, riding Royal Kaliber, owned by Kappler and Kathy Kamine, to the only double-clear score of the day, defeating the reigning World Champion, Rodrigo Pessoa of Brazil, by one penalty.

“I knew all afternoon that I’d have to go clean in order to win this thing,” said Kappler who as the last rider saw Pessoa go clean in the afternoon after scoring one time penalty on Gandini Lianos in the morning’s first round. “There was just no doubt that Rodrigo would force the issue with a clean round.” Pessoa had nothing but praise for his horse and said, “Time faults are always the fault of the rider. My horse was 100% today, I can only blame myself for the time fault.”
The two-round Grand Prix served as the final two United States Equestrian Team (USET) selection trials to pick this country’s squad for the 2002 Show Jumping World Championships to be held as part of the World Equestrian Games in Jerez, Spain in September. The CSI-A also hosted the fourth of the six trials on Friday.

Ireland Fourth In European Pony Championships Team Event
IRELAND'S TEAM came a creditable Fourth in the European Pony Championships at Lanaken, Belgium today (Sunday).
Though consistently in the top five places in the individual classes, with Anthony¹s Condon's Bronze Medal on Friday and a Fourth in the Grand Prix today, and Mark McAuley's Third yesterday, the team had to be content with fourth place out of 12 teams today.
Condon and Andrew Ryan both posted a clear and a four-faulter in the European team event, but the overall score was not good enough to catch winners Gt. Britain, who delivered a fault-free total, nor second place France (12 faults), nor third placed Netherlands on 13. Ireland ended with a total of 16 faults.

The Face of the New USTPA
Nation’s largest not-for-profit team penning association launches new strategy for growth
(Wichita Falls, Texas) – Team penning isn’t the rough and tumble sport it once was but instead has grown into a sport that requires good horsemanship, skill and an ability to compete, a position the United States Team Penning Association (USTPA) is taking in launching a new marketing strategy to grow the sport. The USTPA, the largest not-for-profit team penning association in North America, represents a membership of more than 6,000 team penning enthusiasts and manages, through USTPA Productions, team pennings that offer more than $1.2 million in cash and prizes annually. And the faces of USTPA competitors represent people from rural to corporate environments.
Team penning requires a team of three riders to select three like-numbered cattle from a herd of 30 and move them to a small pen at the opposite end of the arena within a as little as a sixty second time period. Cattle in the herd are numbered 0 to 9, with three cattle bearing each of those numbers. A number glued to their backs indicates the selected cattle.

Irish Arabian cross looking good in Texas
He still growing and therefore there is no reason to believe that Scotty owned by Debby Hall of Amarillo Texas is going to be anything less than a fantastic sport horse. At 15.3 hands, Scotty, by the Irish Draught Stallion O'Leary's Irish Diamond, is proving the nay sayers wrong.
"Why wouldn't a cross that that has been used for years with the continental Warmbloods in Europe work in a cross with an Irish Draught," asked Jim Leary, the owner of O'Leary's Irish Diamond.

The Riding Tree: Balance
WAVERLY, WV When a student gets on a horse to take that first riding lesson, their greatest concern is staying there. Everyone is afraid of falling off, particularly in the beginning. Whether you are the student or whether you are the instructor, you need to be aware of this fear and aware that it is very normal.

Fear of falling creates both mental and physical tension. That’s why relaxation is at the base of the riding tree, the set of skills a rider needs to master in order to develop an independent seat. In order to relax, you have to become aware of every part of your body--every muscle, every joint--and find any places where you are holding tension. When you can let go of all of this involuntary tension, you can move to the second level of the riding tree. When you can stay relaxed over the horse’s center of gravity, you are in balance. When you are in balance, you can stay on the horse.
Essentially, the horse’s center of gravity is right where you sit. If you are gripping with your calves or gripping with your thighs or hanging on the reins in order to stay there, you are not balanced. Good balance requires both being relaxed and being centered. You need both vertical balance and side-to-side balance.

World Champion Rodrigo Pessoa Wins $35,000 Budweiser Speed Derby At 2002 Oaks Blenheim International CSI-A
San Juan Capistrano, CA—July 27, 2002—Show Jumping World Champion Rodrigo Pessoa of Brazil galloped to victory in the $35,000 Budweiser Speed Derby Saturday at the 2002 Oaks Blenheim International CSI-A.
Pessoa topped a field of 27 entries in the one-round speed class where faults were converted to penalty seconds. He and Gandini Bianca D’Amoury, owned by Keri Pessoa, completed the 17-jump course designed by Sydney Olympic course designer Leopoldo Palacios of Venezuela in 88.68 seconds.
Kamal Bahamdan of Saudi Arabia, the day’s third entry, took an early lead in the class when he rode Casita, owned by KB Farms, Ltd, to a time of 90.92 seconds. His lead held up until the day’s 23rd entry, Beezie Madden of Cazenovia, NY, beat his score on Authentic, owned by Elizabeth Busch Burke and John Madden Sales. Madden blistered over the course, finishing with a score of 90.60 seconds that included a five-second penalty for a knockdown at fence 10B. “I really attacked the first fence,” Madden said. “My horse is naturally fast and he just kind of carried me the rest of the way. The course was very long and I think he thought he was done when he had that rail late in the course. I might have ridden that fence a little too soft.”
