Maggie Jayne Struts the Catwalk in the CK Equitation Championship at the 2002 Hampton Classic Horse Show

BRIDGEHAMPTON, NY— August 29, 2002 — Style was the main focus as the $10,000 Calvin Klein Equitation Championship, Phase One, took to the grand prix ring at the 2002 Hampton Classic Horse Show.

For riders aged 14-21, the first phase of this prestigious class was held on Thursday with Maggie Jayne of West Palm Beach, FL, topping the 39-entry field. Jayne’s mount, Grappa, is no stranger to the $10,000 CK Equitation Championship, having won in 2001 for Canadian Brian Walker and in 1998 for Sarah B. Willeman, who still owns the Hanoverian gelding.

Riders are judged on their riding style as they negotiate fences set at heights ranging from 3’6” to 3’9”. Only the top ten riders following Thursday’s opening phase advance to the second phase to be held Saturday morning. The winner is determined by combining the scores from both phases of competition. Unique to this class is that it is the trainers of the riders who are recognized. On Saturday, the trainer of the winning rider will be awarded a trophy and $2,500, the winner’s portion of the $10,000 prize money.

In other show jumping action at the Hampton Classic, it was the battle of the local riders in the $5,000 Open Jumper Stake. Southampton’s Ramiro Quintana riding Maria Bonita edged Bridgehampton’s Laura Bowery, who was aboard Gandini Sky Boy, for the win. The two local riders beat out Sydney Olympian Laura Kraut of Oconomowoc, WI, who finished third with Joyous and Todd Minikus of Loxahatchee, FL, who placed fourth riding Gardenio.

Virginia’s Martha Jolicoeur won the $5,000 Amateur-Owner Jumper Low Classic riding Ezior Danum, owned by her husband, Canadian FEI course designer, Pierre Jolicoeur.

Dorothy Grubb, daughter of Olympic silver medalist for Great Britian, Tim Grubb, claimed the $5,000 Junior Jumper Low Classic for riders aged 18 and under. Despite having four faults in the jump-off riding S&L Buzz, Grubb posted the fastest time, 41.72 seconds to edge out Randy Sherman and Hidden Creek’s Limer, who clocked in at 42.75 seconds.

The Hampton Classic is one of the nation’s premier show jumping competitions. Many of the world’s best equestrians are competing for more than $250,000 in prize money during the Classic, which benefits the Southampton Hospital. Each day of the show is devoted to special events and social activities, culminating with the $150,000 Prudential Financial Grand Prix on Sunday, September 1.

Other featured show jumping events during the Hampton Classic include the $15,000 W.G.H.R. Junior/Amateur Jumper Classic, the $25,000 Sally Hansen Grand Prix, the $30,000 Adequan Grand Prix, the $50,000 Eastern Finals of the Young Jumper Championships, and the $25,000 Calvin Klein Show Jumping Derby for riders under the age of 21.

In addition to the competition, spectators will be treated to a variety of other exciting exhibits including the Boutique Garden’s numerous vendor booths, Stable Row’s 20 booths, three on-site public restaurants, and an Exhibition Horse/Children’s area open throughout the week.

The Hampton Classic continues through Sunday, September 1. Admission is $5 per person or $15 per carload per day, with children under 6 admitted free. Reserved grandstand seating for Sunday, September 1, is $15 per person (in addition to $5/person or $15/carload admission) or $25 per person for premium front-row seating. Parking throughout the show is free.
