horse Liza Towell and Enrique Steal Spotlight at the 2002 Hampton Classic Horse Show

BRIDGEHAMPTON, NY— August 26, 2002 — All eyes were on Liza Towell and Enrique at Manhattan Mortgage Company’s Opening Day presented by Distinction Magazine and Long Island Parents and Children Magazine at the Hampton Classic Horse Show in Bridgehampton, NY.

Towell won the Local Hunter Professional division over 38 other entries riding Enrique while the horse’s owner, Kym Smith of Bridgehampton, NY, claimed the Local Amateur-Owner Champion division from a field of 35 horses. Both riders were jumping fences set at a height of 3’6” in a competition where the horses are judged on their style and movement.

The combination of Enrique’s performance under both riders earned the horse enough points to claim the coveted Grand Hunter Championship title.

“The overall team effort with both of us riding him made Enrique the Grand Hunter Champion,” explained Towell.

In recognition of their achievement, Towell and Smith were awarded the South Fork Perpetual Trophy.

A renowned hunter rider, Towell, 23, originally from Camden, SC, recently graduated from the College of Charleston and moved to Bridgehampton, NY, to train with Smith. Towell’s father, who is in the horse business, was the one who originally owned Enrique before selling him to Smyth.

“I rode the horse before we sold him and he bucked me off!” laughed Towell.

In fact, it was Towell’s 13-year-old brother, Hardin, also competing at the Hampton Classic, who showed Enrique before he was sold to Smith in February.

“He goes in the ring, knows his job, and goes in there to win,” said Towell of Enrique, a six-year-old chestnut French-bred gelding. “He is very dependable and he helps you out by trying hard. He is a real show horse.”

Opening Day at the Hampton Classic Horse Show is a special tradition of this end-of-summer equestrian and social event that dates back 27 years.
