Clarification
Of Body Protecting Vest Requirement In Eventing Rules
This
is a reminder that approved rule changes effective
December 1, 2003, are posted after the Annual Meeting
and throughout the year under Rules/Changes on the
USA Equestrian website at http://www.equestrian.org/rulechange/index.asp.
|
On
July 8, 2003, the USA Equestrian Board of Directors passed
a rule defining light-weight clothing for Cross Country

which was moved in January 2003 to Article 1713.2. All competitors
are still required to wear a body protecting vest during
cross-country whether or not light-weight clothing is worn,
and the requirement of a body protecting vest remains in

Robinsons'
Superstore
Latest News & download page |
At
24,000 square feet, the new Robinsons' Superstore will be
bigger than any other equestrian store in the UK and may
possibly be the biggest in Europe.
With the removal of feed from the site to a new 'Stable
& Farm Store' ten minutes away, it means that there
will be 80% more showroom space for the remaining product
range. The store will also feature a number of top branded
products, which do not appear in the catalogue.
In addition to the impressive customer staircase, there
will also be a lift to give access to the first floor. Having
two floors means Robinsons will have a bigger building on
a smaller amount of land. This means there'll also be more
room for parking, with space for at least 80 cars.
With state-of-the-art audio/video and checkout technology,
shopping at the Robinsons Superstore will be a much more
enjoyable experience. Especially when, due to popular demand,
the size of the Nose Bag Café will be increased.
It will be able to seat up to 50 diners while providing
unique views of the Store forecourt area.

Serio
Continues to Dominate at Vermont Summer Festival
East
Dorset, VTJuly 17, 2003For the second
straight week, Louise Serio of Kennett Square, PA
earned Championship honors in the Second Year Green
Working Hunter Division at the Vermont Summer Festival,
July 9-August 10, at the Harold Beebe Farm in East
Dorset, VT.
Serio
piloted Primo, owned by ARL Farm LLC, to victory at
the Manchester Classic Horse Show, July 16-20. This
well known hunter rider took over the reins for Primos
usual rider Caitlin Venezia after Venezia had a mishap
in the schooling ring, which kept her from showing
the horse.
|
Hes
a wonderful jumper, and hes really come a long way,
Serio said of the gelding, who she showed a few times in
Florida over the winter.
Earlier
in the day, Serio also added a Championship in the First
Year Green Working Hunter division to her list of wins in
East Dorset. She rode Laissez Faire, owned by Bridget Hallman,
to earn the tri-color ribbon over the divisions 12
entries. Hes been so consistent this week. Hes

Jumping - Kerrygold Grand Prix League - Bartlett Makes
Grand Prix Debut Win
TREVOR
Bartlett from Coleraine, Co, Derry, had his first
Grand Prix win of 2003 at National Balmoral in Belfast
today (Thursday) and enters the Kerrygold League with
10 points. However,
Trevor, who was third to go in the jump-off, has a
long way to go to catch the current league leader,
Harry Marshall, who now has 68 points, a total added
to at Balmoral with a Second Place on his trusty <Splendido>.
Heavy
rain dogged the 13-horse jump-off, and Marshall was
a shade slow coming into the last fence, yielding
fractions of a second to Bartlett, and was therefore
unable to catch his fellow-Ulsterman.
Sophie
Hoorn continued with her consistent League performance,
placing Fourth today on <Lord High Flight>,
while Cian O'Connor returned to the national Grand
Prix fray, riding Shelagh O'Callaghan's <Mahon
Point> into Sixth.

Autumn
Worming For Your Horse
With
the nights drawing in, horse owners should be thinking
of treating their horses at the end of the grazing season
for tapeworm and small redworms.
Tapeworm
is known to infect horses throughout the year because
its host, the forage mite, survives on pasture, hay
and bedding. Intervet's 3-year worming plan advises
horse owners to administer a double dose of Pyratape
P, which contains pyrantel as its active ingredient,
at six monthly intervals - in September, at the end
of the grazing season, and in March, at the beginning
of the grazing season. Pyratape P is also a routine
wormer and will remove the adult stages of large redworms,
small redworms, roundworm and pinworms found in the
gastro-intestinal tract.

Samsung
Super League News : It's Tough At The Top ..... And
At The Bottom!
Next
week the Samsung Super League will resume at Hickstead
and, if the second half of the eight-leg series is
anything like as exciting as the first four competitions,
there is much to look forward to over the coming months.
There
are still so many unanswered questions.
Can
the French, who have held the lead from the very start,
continue to maintain their advantage? They began so
convincingly with wins in La Baule and Rome but have
been losing their grip over the past few weeks. Can
the Irish, who are lying second, just a half point
behind, make it a successive hat-trick of wins by
taking the British title? Their recent record at Hickstead
is impressive - winners in 2000 and 2001 and runners-up
by a margin of just 1.24 seconds to Germany last summer
- and they look like real contenders for pole position
in the second half of the series.

The
San Patrignano CSI**** is going to start
Among
the several projects and initiatives to celebrate the 25th
birth anniversary of San Patrignano, it has scheduled to
take place on July 18-20, 2003 in the equestrian centre
of the largest drug rehabilitation community in Europe,
the 7th International Show Jumping "Vincenzo Muccioli
Challenge".
"This
year's edition coincides with one of the most significant
event of our history - says Giacomo Muccioli, Chairman of
the Organizing Committee - In those years, we have created
a breeding made up of high-level jumping horses. In our
stud were born foals which are sons of world champions and
the successful agonistic results achieved by our team have
allowed to make our community known all over the world.
But, the main role of our horses is to help our guests to
get rid of drugs. Many of the 18,000 young people we have
taken in over since 1978 have found, in their relation with
these extraordinary animals, an important instrument which
can help them during their recovery program. I think this
is the real secret which make unique the atmosphere of our
Show".

Marilyn
Little And Hertel Landman Win $50,000 HITS Culpeper
Grand Prix
Culpeper,
VA (July 15, 2003)Marilyn Little of Frederick,
MD, rode her family's Hertel Landman to victory in Sunday's
$50,000 HITS Culpeper Grand Prix. Little bested a field
of twenty-eight horse and rider pairs, sealing her victory
with a clean jump-off round that was two seconds faster
than her nearest rival. Kimberly Frey was the only other
rider to post a double-clear, placing her second with
her mount Tyson, owned by Overlook Farm. Todd Minikus
and Gardenio, owned by Y Z Partners LLC, finished in
third place. Fourth place also went to Marilyn Little
on her second mount Champigny. |
Grand
Prix course designer, Jerry Dougherty, set a challenging
13-obstacle course that narrowed the field to only four
horses for the jump-off. Marilyn Little advanced to the
shortened seven-fence jump-off course with two horsesChampigny
and Hertel Landman. Little opened with Champigny and the
pair had some trouble at the double, knocking both rails
and incurring a time fault. Todd Minikus and Gardenio were
next to enter the ring. Minikus was robbed of his clear
round, also at the double, when he knocked the last rail.
Little's second trip on Hertel Landman proved to be the
winning performance of the day. The pair cruised the course
in a very fast time of 45.71 seconds leaving all the rails
up. Kimberley Frey and Tyson finished out the field. Frey
guided Tyson clear but could not catch Little's time, finishing
in a time of 48.28 seconds. Please click

Left-Handers
Have Their Day!
Right-handers
beware! Things will be taking a sinister turn on 13th August
2003, as left-handers mark the 11th annual Left-Handers
Day celebrations by declaring their homes and offices "Lefty
Zones" where right-hand dominance, for once, will be
banned. The 28,000 members of The Left-Handers Club, and
the thousands of visitors to the www.left-handersday.com
website will be celebrating their sinistrality by turning
the tables on right-handers, who will experience how awkward
and frustrating it can be living in a "back-to-front-world".
Organised
by the International Left-Handers Club, the purpose of Left-Handers
Day is to create awareness among the right-handed majority,
in a light-hearted way, of the problems right-biased design
of everything from scissors to sinks, chequebooks to computer
mice, or musical instruments to microwaves can have on the
13% of the population who do not use their right hand for
tasks.

The
Skyros Pony
The
Skyrian pony is an unique breed of pony only existing
here in Greece and is at the moment in great danger
as you will understand when you read on. We have started
a refuge here on the Island of Corfu and are trying
to save the race.
Skyrian ponies may be the ones depicted on the Parthenon
frieze, not carved in small proportion to emphasize
the stature of the riders, but naturally diminutive.
They are certainly the ponies that facilitated agriculture
on the Island of Skyros for centuries. Skyros, the largest
and most remote of the Sporades islands, has two faces
- a fertile a fertile north where agriculture dominates,
and a mountainous and arid southern section which rises
to 792 metres. |
No-one
knows how long the ponies have lived on this island, and
no records exist to pinpoint the start of there cooperation
with man. During the winter, when food and water are plentiful,
the ponies live wild on the southern mountain. But when
the summer comes, and nourishment is scarce, they migrate
north in search of food and water and in return let themselves
to be approached by farmers for threshing and other agricultural
work

What
Does "Horse Professional" Mean To You?
You
hear the term over and over. The horse industry is represented
by a diverse group of participants. Riders, trainers, and
instructors of the many disciplines; horse health care providers
such as boarding stables, farriers, veterinarians, and complementary
care providers; feed companies; tack and stable equipment
suppliers; builders and fencing companies; trailer sales;
show and recreation providers. This list is only a beginning.
Many industries and professions have standards that indicate
how a person becomes a "professional" within that
field. Doctors go to medical school. Real estate and insurance
professionals are required to pass licensing. School teachers
must continue to gather staff development credits throughout
their careers. These are a few examples. The horse industry
is, once again, a horse of a different color. There are
many opportunities for continuing education, on and off
the horse. There are also certifications and competitive
honors that can be gained. So then, what does "horse
professional" mean?

Jumping - Kerrygold Grand Prix League - Smyth Makes
A Winning Return To Ballina
Peter
Smyth made a winning return to Ballina today (Sunday)
with Zara's Pride for the latest Super League Grand
Prix, and erased the memories of taking a wrong course
at the venue on his only previous visit as a pony
rider twenty years ago.
A
bumper crowd packed the stand at the sunny Co. Mayo
venue and witnessed an intiguing finale as the lead
changed hands three times during the jump-off.
Gerry
Byrne's technical course provided a stiff test for
the 27 starters, with just seven riders going clear
first time around, and only three double clears being
produced after the jump-off.

Lt.
Shane Carey Takes BJ Trophy At Falsterbo
Army
rider Lt. Shane Carey kept up his fine record at Falsterbo,
Sweden this morning (Sunday) with a lightning-fast
round on Laughton's Lass to take the BJ Trophy.
One
of the last few to jump from 47 starters, Limerick-born
Carey craftily guided the 11 year-old mare clear in
the very warm conditions, and took almost a second
off the time of long-time leader Cristino Garcia of
Spain on Loughtown Atlanta. "This
was a very fast Class and he had to go full tilt from
start to finish," said a delighted Chef d'Equipe
of the Irish team, Comdt. Gerry Mullins. "He
left out strides here and there, and he left them
out very well." Last
year, Lt. Carey had been Leading Rider at the Falsterbo
show, and had also taken the Grand Prix, and today's
success adds to the traditional good record Irish
riders and horses have had at the Swedish venue.

The
Mountain Pleasure Horse
For
more than 160 years, Eastern Kentuckians have enjoyed
their homegrown product, the Mountain Pleasure Horse.
Generation after generation of Kentuckians have stories
to tell of their easy gaited, hard working, good disposition,
reliable Mountain Pleasure Horses.
For
years called "Mountain Horses" or "Country
Saddle" horses, the Mountain Pleasure Horse is
the old-time gaited breed of horse that existed in Kentucky
160 years ago and from which selective breeders developed
the Tennessee Walking Horses, American Saddlebred Horses
and more recently Rocky Mountain Horses. Long before
these other gaited breeds were in existence, a particular
type of horse was being bred on the steep hillsides
to work the fields and "ride the best". The
Mountain Pleasure Horse quietly existed in the mountains
of Eastern Kentucky where the Breeders maintained the
old-time horse, by selecting for their basic criteria--
GAIT and DISPOSITION |
The
Mountain Pleasure Horse's distinctive, easy-riding gait
allows the surefooted horse to cover alot of ground with
minimum effort for both horse and rider.
The gait is an evenly spaced, four beat lateral gait with
moderate forward speed and extension, without exaggerated
knee and hock action. The horse moves out with a gait in
which one can count four distinct hoofbeats that produce
a cadence of near equal rhythm.
The
gait is natural. It is bred into these horses through generations
of proper breeding. No action devices, aids or harsh training
methods are necessary or allowed by the Mountain Pleasure
Horse Association.

The
2nd International Polo Festival comes to Kerry
This
September the world's largest polo tournament since
1991 is taking place. The venue isn't Smiths Lawn
in England, an estancia outside Buenos Aires or even
the hallowed turf of Phoenix Park in Dublin, but on
the Dingle Peninsular on the West Coast of Ireland.
Players and polo fans from around the world are meeting
at the close of the European polo season for a final
polo showdown on the sands of Inch Strand. This is
the second time that polo tournaments have been held
at Inch and the location lends a great sense of fun
to what can be a stuffy sport. Last year saw a trial
run for this year's festival when 4 teams from Cork,
Waterford, Loais and Limerick met for a weekend's
sport and festivities.
Polo was first played in Europe in Limerick in the
1860s, but went into a decline in popularity. The
sport in Ireland is undergoing a revival with five
new clubs starting up in the past four years and player
numbers doubling to around 200. The comparative newness
of the sport here will give the teams from countries
with more established polo traditions an advantage
at Inch.

Dramatic Win Takes Her To Third In Table
There
was a dramatic conclusion to today's Grand Prix at

Carrying
