Ireland Fourth In Linz Nations Cup

The water jump caused many riders a problem in today's Nations Cup competition at Linz, Austria, but none more so than Ireland's Lt. David O'Brien, whose Boherdeal Clover had two refusals at the jump, and was eliminated.

In the first round, 24 out of 50 horses had a foot in the water jump, and in the second round it also caught Cian O'Connor's Waterford Crystal, whose heel touched the tape, spoiling what was otherwise a perfect round.

Chef d'Equipe Lt. Gerry Mullins saud : << I have never seen Waterford Crystal jump better in his career, and it was a shame that the water spoiled what would have been a classic double clear for Cian. Lt. David O'Brien was most unfortunate, having won the speed class this morning, and then picking up two refusals in the Nations Cup. I also think that Denis Coakley and Obos Quality deserve praise for their performance. As relative newcomers to the pressure of Nations Cups, they did very well indeed.>>

Ireland ended up Fourth in the Linz Nations Cup, with a total of 32 faults. This adds four points to their Nations Cup tally this season, bringing them up to 20 points. The British team did not make it into the second round. Thirteen nations competed.

After Linz, Irish teams will be hoping to improve their team ranking at AACHEN, Germany (June 25-30), FALSTERBO, Sweden (July 11-14), LUMMEN, Belgium (July 11-14), HICKSTEAD, England (July 24-28), and DUBLIN (August 7-11).
