IMPRESSIVE BRONZE FOR ‘CLASSIC’ WINNER AT ARMATHWAITE HALL STRONGID-P HORSE TRIALS

Lake District sculptor Nelson Nanson has unveiled a specially commissioned bronze trophy commissioned for presentation to the winner of the Armathwaite Hall Strongid-P Classic section (June 30 - July 2).

The specially commissioned bronze challenge trophy to be awarded to the winner of the Strongid-P Classic section.

Artist Peter Nelson, who has realised his childhood passion for sculpture after 20 years in other careers, produces his sculptures under the name of Nelson Nanson. A Lake District resident, he says he has tried to produce a piece with “lots of action in it.”

“I originally thought about an abstract idea”, he said “but then came up with the idea of a horse jumping over the letter ‘A’ - which stands for Armathwaite Hall, Athleticism, Action and Achievement.

“It’s the first horse I’ve ever produced - I normally do figurative sculptures - and it has been a difficult piece to do, as there are even more curves than the human body. It’s also been a very quick commission and I really only had one chance to get it right - I’m really pleased with it.”

The bronze will now be mounted in a base of wood from the Armathwaite Hall estate and will be presented to the winner of the Strongid-P Classic section on Sunday afternoon.
