Percheron
First At The Royal Show
The
Percheron - a heavy horse breed with its roots in medieval
France and Arabia, but only introduced into Britain less
than 90 years ago - is to stage its own National Championships
at the 2004 Royal Show.
This
is one of a number of new innovations in the equine classes
at the Show, which also sees an open multiples class for
the Withers LLP Coaching Marathon section.
"Having
the National Championships at the Royal Show complements
our existing Royal Bank of Scotland Heavy Horse section.
And by using the Royal Show's dedicated equine display arena,
the Percheron Society has been able to schedule in new classes,"
says Royal Show organiser, Debbie Dann.
"This
will be the first year that these championships have included
two new ridden classes for pure and 50% part-bred Percherons."
Adding: "We're expecting as many as 40 animals to compete
in total. Please

The
British Horse Society urges all Horse Owners to obtain
Final Draft of Ragwort code
The
British Horse Society (BHS) has welcomed the final
draft of the Ragwort code of practice recently published
by Defra. However, there still remains an area of
concern over guideline distances for risk assessment.
The Society urges all horse owners, along with landowners
and other grazing animal owners, to obtain a copy
of the code, and to submit their comments.
|
The
initial draft code of practice to prevent the spread of
Ragwort was launched at the Royal International Horse Show
last July and has since undergone rigorous scrutiny by interested
organisations, including the BHS, Local Government Authority,
Network Rail, Highways Agency and several conservation groups.

Horsebox theft on the increase in Home Counties.
Horsebox
theft is on the increase in the Home Counties, warns South
Essex Insurance Brokers, with vehicles left unattended at
stables or livery yards being most at risk.
Three
vehicles, one worth £30,000, were stolen on one night.
After another spate of thefts in early April, one owner
located his vehicle after a tip-off and police subsequently
recovered it together with five others.
South
Essex recommends that, if possible, horseboxes should be
kept at home. If not then, owners should look at livery
yards or stables with CCTV. Any horsebox left overnight
or for long periods should be immobilised, the company suggests. Please
