FEI GANDINI WORLD JUMPING RIDERS RANKINGS

The leader of the FEI Gandini World Jumping Riders Rankings, Ludger Beerbaum of Germany keeps his position of leader, with 3577 points ahead of the Swiss Markus Fuchs (2952 pts) and Brazilian Rodrigo Pessoa (2486 pts). Beerbaum will drop a record number of 675 pts at the end of the month, reducing the gap to his runner-up Fuchs, who will however also drop a fair amount of points (325).

The 25th World Cup Champion Marcus Ehning (GER) recuperates the 4th place of the rankings thanks to the 180 points earned in Las Vegas.

Laura Kraut, best American rider of the World Cup Final, earned 95 points in Las Vegas and is now 17th.

FEI BCM WORLD DRESSAGE RIDERS RANKINGS

Ulla Salzgeber (GER) leads the FEI BCM World Dressage Riders Rankings with a score of 80.475 points. She is followed by Nadine Capellmann (GER) and Lisa
Wilcox (USA). Debbie McDonald (USA) drops one place and is now 5th, behind Beatrizz Ferrer-Salat who is now 4th.

SAMSUNG SUPER LEAGUE
COMING YOUR WAY VERY SOON!

The all-important draw for the Nations Cup competition will take place during the official launch of the Samsung Super League series at 20.45 on Friday May 9th in La Baule.

Definite entries and further information on La Baule are available on website: www.labaule-cheval.com.

As the series draws nearer there has been further clarification of the situation regarding the participation of teams at each event. In La Baule, Rome, Hickstead, Dublin and Rotterdam only the eight Super League teams will compete while at St. Gallen, and for the final event in Barcelona, the national teams are also invited. A team from the United States of America has, exceptionally, been invited to Aachen.

A reminder of the schedule for this first running of the Samsung Super League series:

FEI DEVELOPMENT WORKING GROUP

The Executive Board, in its March meeting in Zurich, approved the creation of a Development Working Group in the framework of the FEI Strategic Planning Committee. The Working Group will consider the future role and direction for the Development Department within the global FEI strategy. Its goals are: 1) Establish a regional coaching structure; 2) Review development programmes for NFs; 3) Establish progressive regional competitions and championships. This should enable the FEI to develop the fantastic potential of its small NFs which represent the basis and future of the Equestrian Sport.

The Development Working Group will be composed of the following persons :

Cristoph Hess (GER)
Karl-Heinz Giebmanns (GER)
Jean-Philippe Camboulives (FRA)
Peter Strijbosch (NED)

All members have a broad experience in the field of sports development and coaching and will hold their first meeting by end of May (exact date to be confirmed).

THE HORSE IN OUTSIDER ART

On May 5, 2003 an exhibition on "the horse in Outsider Art" opened in the museum im Lagerhaus St. Gallen, Switzerland. The exhibition comprises of approximately 150 works: paintings, drawings and sculptures from 60 outsider artists all with the theme of the horse.

The exhibition in the Lagerhaus, a museum which concentrates on naïve and Outsider Art coincides with the CSIO St. Gallen (29 May to 1 June) and is open until 6 July 2003.

Outsider art comprises naïve art, art created by mentally handicapped, by visionaries or by self-taught artists outside of the mainstream of the art world. Among the major outsider artists in the exhibition are Adolf Dietriech, Aloise, Carlo, Jaber, Hans Krüsi, Michel Nedjar, Martin Ramirez André Robillard, Louis Soutter, the artists from Gugging and the Navajo Indian woman Mamie Deschillie

A catalogue was published, edited by Max E. Amman. A limited number are available free of charge from the FEI.


IN MEMORIAM
Jozsef (Joe) Turi died on 29 April 2003, one week after an accident when riding a motorcycle. He was 47 years old.

Joe Turi was born in Hungary and came to England as a young boy and stayed. In the mid eighties, he became a member of the British Jumping Team, competing for his adopted country in the 1988 Olympic Games where he finished 14th.

After political changes in Easter Europe, Joe Turi returned to his native Hungary and now as Jozsef Turi became immediately the mainstay in the Hungarian Jumping team. In 1998 he rode for Hungary in the Wold Equestrian Games, finishing 6th. He was in Sydney for the 2000 Olympic Games but was unable to compete because his horse was lame.

In addition, Joe Turi rode in three European Championships, winning the team Gold medal in 1989 in the British team. He qualified six times for the World Cup Final (4 times for Great Britain, twice for Hungary) placing ninth in 1988.

Turi rode in more than 50 Nations Cups, among which 33 for Great Britain, and was in 16 wining teams. His major individual sport achievement was in 1987 at Olympia when, riding Vital, he won the World Cup Competition
