APHA blazes new trails at Philmont
Scout Ranch in first of three recreational rides slated this year
|
FORT WORTH-The American Paint Horse Association
(APHA) took trail riders to new heights recently with three separate journeys
on horseback through the thick pine forests of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains
in northern New Mexico. Fifty-one people from eight states participated in the
ride, which took place April 30-May 4 at the sprawling Philmont Boy Scout
Ranch, located four miles south of Cimarron, New Mexico.
The recreational riding
enthusiasts ventured into rugged territory that has remained relatively
untouched since legendary frontiersmen like Kit Carson carved out some of the
trails in the mid-1800s. A century later, philanthropist Waite Phillips was
responsible for preserving the beauty of the area when he donated more than
127,000 acres of unsettled territory to the Boy Scouts of America. |
|
APHA members had the unique opportunity to ride
through the magnificent countryside and up the mountains on horseback. Those
journeys have traditionally been reserved only for the Boy Scouts.

Equestrian Education: Where it All
Begins
The dream of getting paid for doing something they
love is what attracts young people to the horse business. And what better way
to start that career than with a solid education in equestrian studies.
Education is, after all, concentrated experience, and two years in a good
horsemanship program can be more valuable than 10 years out there trying to
figure it out by yourself. |
The increasing number of horsemanship programs,
whether college affiliated or not, makes choosing a school baffling. Let me
offer this starting place: the single most important factor for the serious
horseman to consider in comparing programs is total number of hours spent on
horseback. This may sound obvious, but it's not. More than a few schools offer
curricula of horse-related activities, but only two or three hours per week on
horseback. But horsemanship is a sport requiring unique physical and mental
skills, and there's only one way to develop those skills: on the back of a
horse. A good school will pair students up with a variety of different horses
over the duration of study; and to maximize individual attention, will maintain
a teacher/student ratio, in riding class, of around 1/6 (one teacher for every
six students). The outside limit for riding class size in my opinion is seven
students. So while several prestigious universities are entering the equestrian
field, the programs that can give you the most saleable skills are the ones
that keep you in the saddle the longest.

"Good Horsemanship is Built on Solid Basics...So is
Good Business!"
Building A Marketing Plan
Marketing plans, business plans -
Understanding the difference between these two "animals" sets the
stage for the effective use of both. As a horse business owner or manager, you
are the most important resource your business has. Your focus is broad-range.
This means that you have long-range goals, and short term objectives to reach
those goals. You have so many irons in the fire, you often aren't sure which
one you should be tending. Preparing a business plan helps you to structure and
prioritize your business. It provides you with general guidelines for
operation. A marketing plan thenbecomes your "implementation plan".
Many businesses have no formal business or marketing plan. Reasons frequently
given for not having these plans are that the owner/manager is too busy coping
with daily survival, that the market changes too quickly, and that they are
only paper and are too hard to implement. It is smart to avoid a plan that is
just paperwork. It is also true that in a very small organization, the business
purpose (mission) may be so narrow that a detailed plan is excessive. For
example, a freelance riding instructor could put together a plan that only
requires eight hours of thought, research and writing. An entrepreneur opening
a boarding stable may spend an entire week or more doing research and
constructing a plan that is 20-30 pages in length. Many new organizations,
however, find a plan valuable because they lack history and their options are
so wide. A plan aids in choosing wisely between alternatives. Do you want to
offer boarding and instruction, or just one or the other? Will you be the only
instructor/trainer on the premises,or will boarders bring in their own?

Training Mythunderstandings - Learning
from Horses: Mama
Everything I've learned about communicating with
horses I've learned from horses. Sometimes it took awhile for the lessons they
were teaching me to sink in. But the wisdom they shared with me gradually
accumulated and became the system we now teach at Meredith Manor. Particular
horses stand out in my memory. |
One was an old style, liver chestnut Quarter mare
with those bulgy muscles and little feet who was already doing a lot of things
before we bought her to show. She had high withers, the kind that are good for
holding a saddle when you're roping or cutting. She had a rather plain, coarse
head that might have been ugly except that she had a real soft eye that made
you forgive the rest. Her registered name was WMD Aloha and the guy we bought
her from called her Mother. That got shortened to Mama and Mama she was for the
rest of her life.
