PETER CHARLES RUNS AWAY WITH FRENCH DERBY FOR IRELAND

WITH THE 2001/2 NATIONS CUP series kicking off in earnest tomorrow (Tuesday), Ireland's Peter Charles gave the best indication yet that the Irish are in battle mood with a surprise win at the La Baule Derby in France this evening (Monday), riding <Traxdata Corrada>.

During the last few weeks Irish riders have laid down a record-breaking series of wins on the European show jumping circuit, with Harry Marshall alone clocking up five First Places in just over two weeks in three separate shows in Italy (Parabiago, Modena, Cervia), while Conor Swail has come very close to Harry's tally in the same shows.

Twenty-one year-old Cian O'Connor, who was a strong element of the world-beating Irish Nations Cup teams last year, is also in Europe with his three top horses, and has already taken a First at Modena, Italy, while Dermott Lennon ran a close second in the Grand Prix at Maubeuge, France at the end of last month. Jessica Kurten, meanwhile, took First Place in Monte Carlo just two days earlier.

So can the Irish prove that last year's astonishing victory in winning the Samsung Nations Cup Series outright was no flook? Peter Charles, Dermott Lennon, Billy Twomey and Cameron Hanley will give some indication of the answer when they set out on the first of the great Nations Cup competitions in La Baule, France, tomorrow.
