The last competition of the newly introduced World Cup Driving was held in Göteborg. Michael Freud (GER) who already won two competitions in Stuttgart and Bordeaux also won in Göteborg and therefore became the first undisputed World Cup Champion 2002.

FEI GROUP IX MEETING

The second group meeting since its formation in 2000 was held at Kyalami in South Africa on Saturday 16th March.

Delegates representing nine of the twelve Group countries: Botswana, Kenya, Namibia, Malawi, Mauritius, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe attended. They were joined by an observer from Lesotho who have made application to join FEI. The meeting was chaired by Group Chairman, Ernst Holtz, and attended by Dr. Bo Helander, FEI Secretary General. The National Olympic Committee of South Africa again contributed to the cost of the conference centre and accommodation of the participants.

The Chairman welcomed all the delegates and gave a brief summary for the year under review, followed by reports from each of the Federations regarding activities and developments during the year.

Mrs. Makoele, deputy director of the Lesotho Sport Ministry, reported that a German organisation that had visited Lesotho in 1999 and 2000 had an opportunity to assess the Lesotho riders. In this mountainous country horses are the major means of transport. As a result the Lesotho Horse Association was formed in Berlin and this organisation has the main goal of training a group of selected riders in Germany with the aim of eventually participating at the Olympic Games. The initiative has the full backing of the Sports Council of Lesotho.

The meeting was informed about the various inter-Federation competitions in Dressage, Show-jumping and Eventing which had taken place in the year under review. The latest information about equine flu and African Horse Sickness was tabled. Border formalities among countries were also addressed.

FEI’s offer of sending instructors to member countries was discussed and FEI were thanked for the visit by Mariette Withages, Chairman of the Dressage Committee, early in the year which had been a great success.

Endurance which is strong, particularly in South Africa, with some 1200 members and 3000 horses, is growing at 10% per year whereby Children and Juniors are particularly well represented in the sport. The Chairman of the FEI Endurance Committee, Hallvard Sommerseth attended the National Championships which had 250 riders competing.

Members reiterated that the FEI Challenge, both in Show- jumping and Dressage, played a vital part in the regions activities as they were the only link to the International scene, albeit on a remote basis. They were informed of the intentions of the FEI World Cup for Eventing which met with favour.

The next Group meeting is to be held in Namibia on the first weekend in March 2003.
