international recognition.
Tuesday
13 April will see sixty children competing in The
British Horse Society's (BHS) Equitation Competition,
sponsored by the Elise Pilkington Trust, at Warwickshire
College in front of HRH The Princess Royal. The children,
all riding school clients who do not own their own
pony, have qualified from across the UK and, for the
first year from Hong Kong, in what is the only competition
of its kind.
|
Accompanied
by their instructors, the children will be competing on
riding school ponies in a short dressage test and over a
show jumping course watched by The Society's Royal President.
Each competitor will also sit a half hour theory test containing

7-Year-Old
Wins $2,500, Buys Arabian Dream Horse
Seven-year-old
Madison Stephens may be a little girl, but she has big dreams
and an uncanny ability to make them happen. After seeing
a flyer for a photo cover contest for the Hodges Badge Company
that offered a first prize of $2,500, Madison said to her
mom Lisa Stephens, "Let's do it. I know I can win the
money to buy a horse."
Madison's
instructor, Virginia Godwin, snapped a captivating picture
of her student kissing her oldest school horse after winning
a championship at a Virginia Arabian Horse Association District
6 Open Show last September. Today that photo graces the
cover of the 2004 Hodges Badge Company Catalog, and Madison
is the proud owner of an Arabian gelding. Madison's photo
was chosen from among 330 entries because of the affection
she showed for her horse and the clarity of the rosette.

Brentina
out of FEI World Cup Final
FEI
World Cup Champion Debbie McDonald has had to withdraw
Parry and Peggy Thomas's chestnut mare Brentina from
next week's Final in Duesseldorf due to injury.
After their warm up competition at CDI Dortmund two
weeks ago, where they won both the Grand Prix and
Grand Prix Special, Brentina was found to have a slightly
swollen leg. Despite careful monitoring, hopes that
the US combination could defend their title were dashed
when leading veterinarian Dr Peter Cronau diagnosed
a mild tendon strain. While not serious for the mare's
future, this would however make any performance during
the next few weeks inadvisable. Please

Huge
Potential For United Horse Industry To Grow - Alun Michael
Minister
for the Horse Alun Michael today challenged the horse industry
to unite in order to maximise its potential. Speaking at
the National Equine Forum, he invited everybody interested
in horses to contribute to the development of a strategy
for the industry's future growth.
Mr
Michael also announced publication of the first-ever research
on the horse industry as a whole, jointly funded by Defra
and the British Horse Industry Confederation. He commented:
"When
I came to Defra I was shocked by the lack of data and analysis
that would be standard in any other industry. How can any
industry plan ahead - and how can Government help - without
facts, analysis, evidence, trends? And when the industry
is as varied, stratified and divided as the horse industry,
it's a recipe for disaster. Working with the industry, the
Government has made great strides in putting that right."

a "tourist attraction" its unique "hands

tourists and families looking for a day our with a Real
difference!
The Centre looks after big horses with problems and
visitors can actually groom the horse of their choice
during the daily programme.
Because of the unusual nature of the days events, it
is very important to arrive in good time.
The numbers of visitors allowed close to the animals
is limited and close supervision is obviously very important.

South
Essex Acts To Bring Down 4X4 Premiums For Horse Owners
Four-wheel
drive vehicles mean different things to different people
- to some a fashion accessory but to equestrian fans a work
horse!
Now
South Essex Insurance Brokers is linking two of its areas
of expertise, horses and vehicles, to offer a better deal
for horse owners and their 4x4s.
"Premiums
have risen on 4x4s because of their growth as a fashion
accessory used for the school runs and shopping," said
South Essex equestrian director David Buckton. "The
insurance risks when used by horse owners to tow trailers
and move hay and straw are totally different."

CLA
Asks DEFRA To Get A Grip On Horse Export Debacle |
The
Country Land and Business Association (CLA) is asking DEFRA
to clarify a number of issues which are throwing angry horse
owners into confusion.
In Britain horses cannot be exported live unless they meet
a minimum value - a rule that allows exports of valuable
competition horses, racehorses and breeding stock but effectively
bans their export for food. However Government now appears
likely to lift this ban, seemingly to conform with the rest
of Europe where horses are considered livestock and enter
the human food chain.
Although the EU seems willing to continue Britain's exemption
on minimum value grounds, DEFRA no longer wants to make
horses a special case, allowing them to be exported as livestock,
a move that is causing widespread anger amongst the horse
industry. Please
