judges Tickled pink by purple carrots
A
Cambridgeshire grower is the inaugural winner of a new category
in the NFU Farming Excellence Awards, the Best Innovation
in the Food Chain Award, sponsored by Marks & Spencer,
for developing and growing purple carrots.
Clem
Tompsett, managing director of Tompsett Burgess Growers,
first started trying to develop purple carrots five years
ago in private trials on his farm and brought them to market
just last year.
Carrots
were originally purple until Dutch growers patriotically
developed an orange variety which soon became the most common
variety and Clems idea was to re-introduce purple
carrots as a fun way of encouraging children to eat more
vegetables. Please

Obstructions
On Rights Of Way: Removal Process Is Tightened
New
provisions for removing obstructions from public rights
of way are outlined by Rural Affairs Minister Alun Michael
in guidance for local authorities, published today.
The guidance has been prepared in the light of legislative
changes under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act, which
will require local authorities to ensure obstructions are
cleared within a set timescale. Keeping rights of way clear
of obstructions which interfere with the public's use and
enjoyment has always been the responsibility of local authorities,
but this is the first time a limit has been put on the window
in which they must act. If they fail to comply, a magistrate's
court order can now be served, compelling them to do so.

FEI Testing In Eventing
Further
to recent media attention in relation to the use of
prohibited medication (i.e. sedatives) in Eventing,
the FEI would like provide the following update. In
2003, FEI responded immediately to rumours circulating
about the use of sedatives in the Dressage test of
Eventing and the subsequent use of 'reversal' agents
prior to the cross-country.
The Federation took this matter seriously and discussed
it in detail during its April 2003 Bureau Meeting.
Further to consultation with the Veterinary Committee,
the Medication Sub-Committee and the FEI Veterinary
department, it was decided to increase the testing
activities during several major events.
