A
16-year-old and her Paint Horse win prestigious eventing competition
title
Florida
family takes chance on 'Joker's Wild' and wins American Paint
Horse of the Year honors
|
FORT WORTH, Texas-In
most card games, jokers have no value, so they are culled from the
deck and cast aside. In other games, they reign supreme as "wild"
or "trump" cards, and everyone hopes to be dealt one.
Jane Barron of
Monticello, Fla., didn't know what she would be dealt when she ventured
into the world of horse ownership to buy a horse for her then 8-year-old
daughter, Becca, in 1994.
A
friend suggested a pretty 4-year-old sorrel and white Paint
Horse she had seen grazing in a field near her hometown. Mrs.
Barron entertained the idea, but only briefly. "A
young horse for a young child just didn't make sense," she
recalled.
When
Mrs. Barron found out the horse was destined for an auction,
however, compassion got the best of her.

Leading
Event Rider Helps To Develop New Concept Saddle.
Leading
event rider Gary Parsonage has been instrumental in testing
and helping to develop a revolutionary new saddle in conjunction
with Walsall master craftsman, Frank Baines.
"The
Reflex close contact saddle combines two key features essential
for today's rider; an extremely soft and comfortable seat
allowing excellent balance for the rider and our new extended
point system (EXP) that benefits the horse," explains
Frank.
|
|
"The EXP system
creates a larger bearing surface to more evenly distribute the weight
and pressure of the rider across the horses' back, giving more comfort
and freedom for the horse, especially when landing after a jump."
On landing,
the combined weight of the rider and horse is taken on the front legs
which then transfers across the body as the hind legs touch down.
By using the EXP system, the weight of the rider is spread, thus reducing
the pressure on the horses back from the point of the tree by up to
four times.
Based on
the extremely popular Elan close contact, the Reflex has been extensively
developed in the USA for the last three years and thoroughly tested
by several leading competitive riders both at home and abroad.

BETA
FMD Survey Throws New Light on Affects of the Outbreak
AN industry
wide survey carried out by the British Equestrian Trade Association
into last year's FMD outbreak has thrown new light on the impact
of the crisis.
The
findings confirm that FMD affected some manufacturers and retailers
more than others while an estimated total of £235 million
turnover was lost to the equestrian industry. |
The overall downturn
in turnover across the whole trade averaged nearly 10 per cent but
by the end of the year, both retail and suppliers showed a significant
increase in turnover compared with the same time the previous year.
BETA Chief
Executive and Secretary Claire Williams said: "Starting as it
did at the beginning of a new sales season and just after the BETA
International Trade Fair, FMD impacted not just on future turnover
but resulted in the loss of investment made through marketing campaigns
and new product launches.

Pet Care With Soda Crystals
Don't let
the cost of some of today's cleaning sprays put you off giving
your pet's cage or pen a regular clean out.
There is a less expensive solution to making sure your pet
has a clean, hygiemic place to live and you don't even have
to go to a specialist pet shop to buy it. You will find Soda
Crystals, the cleaning solution used by generations of households,
in every supermarket chain store throughout the U.K.
|
They are displayed
in the laundry ot household products section and will cost you around
84p for a 1Kg pack. The
beauty of Soda Crystals is that you can mix them to the strength you
need for the job. And you can make up as much or as little of the
solution as you want. For tackling particularly dirty jobs, use a
strong Soda Crystals solution. Dissolve one cup of Soda Crystals to
every pint of hot water used. FDor a regular strength solution, reduce
the Soda Crystals to half a cup for every ipnt of hot water used.

The
Pfizer Ridgeway Sponsored Ride
|
Pfizer, makers
of StrongidTM-P, have pledged their full support for the Spinal Research
Saddle-Up Campaign, and are sponsoring the Ridgeway Sponsored Ride
in 2002. The ride will mark the end of the second year of the Campaign
which has already raised over £30,000 for the charitys
new research programme, but they need to raise £3 million a
year to take us a step closer to clinical trials on treatments for
broken necks and backs.
The team
at Spinal Research are thrilled to be working with everyone at Pfizer
who are such keen supporters of equestrian events and of its participants.
Supporting Saddle-Up and the work of Spinal Research seems to
make such good sense for all those of us who ride and we are pleased
to be involved with such an exiting event, said Laura Jenkins,
Strongid-P Brand Manager at Pfizer. Strongid-P recently sponsored
the Indoor Horse Driving Trials Championships National Final, of which
the Saddle-Up Campaign was the beneficiary. It is great to be
helping the charity build on the existing support that riders are
so obviously keen to give and to help Spinal Research meet their funding
needs Laura added.

Duncan McFarlane
And Eezy Make Easy Work Of $50,000 Rio Vista Grand Prix |
Duncan McFarlane
aboard Kathie Cheatham's Eezy was the first rider to clear Danny Foster's
course in today's 27 horse $50,000 Rio Vista Grand Prix, and McFarlane
never looked back. Only Misti Cassar joined the New Zealand rider
in the jump-off. Although Cassar qualified two horses for the jump-off,
McFarlane was determined to give Cassar a run for the money. "I
wanted to keep the pressure on, but I also wanted to be clean. I didn't
want to go too crazy." McFarlane took a very tight line and the
big Irish-bred gelding made inside cuts with a cleverness belying
his large, lanky frame. The pair stopped the clock in 45.20. "That
was a flawless jump-off ride," stated fellow grand prix rider
Richard Spooner from the sidelines.

Training
Mythunderstandings - Whips And Spurs And All That Excitement.
WAVERLY, WV As the horse moves along through
his training, you go from showing him what you want to asking
him for it and finally he knows what you want well enough
that you can just tell him.
|
For example, when
you're heeding a horse on the ground in an arena and you want him
canter off on his left lead, you'll "skip"along keeping
your left leg ahead of your right and you'll turn your shoulders so
they create a feeling of "open" and "forward"
in the direction you want him to go. In the beginning, since he doesn't
yet understand what you're showing him, you'll probably extend your
right arm out parallel to the wall and wiggle your whip to make a
little fuss and create a little more activity in the horse. If he
still doesn't get the feel of what you want, you might drop back a
little further toward his hip or move in a little closer to him or
whatever it takes for the light bulb to go on over that particular
horse's head.
Once he understands what you are showing him, you can ask for the
left lead canter and expect a more immediate response. You won't need
quite so many pressures to create the feel in the horse of the shape
that you want. When he's consistently giving you the left lead canter
whenever you ask for it, now you can just tell him that's what you
want with only the beginning of that little skip. That becomes enough
to remind him of the full feel of the shape. It has become something
like a signal but if the horse gets rusty, you can just go back to
using a full corridor of pressures that ask for "canter"
until he associates just one part of the corridor with the "canter"
shape again.

Grand Prix |
Mary Tyng and Southshore

Grand Prix at the HITS Indio Desert Circuit. Show jumping action continued
after a week break, and Tyng came into the second half of the Circuit
ready for top competition. "I am not trying to qualify for the
World Cup this year, so I planned a heavier season in the last half
of this Circuit," said an ebullient Tyng after her victory.
