Polo Sunday @ International Polo Club Palm Beach Feb.8,2004

WELLINGTON, Florida - With a gracious gesture to the storied history of a sport more than 2,500 years old, high-goal polo continued to flourish at the International Polo Club Palm Beach on and off the field during action at the 22-goal Hall of Fame Cup.

A crowd of 1,157 enjoyed a cool, sunny day honoring polo and polo history. The on-field festivities began with the parade of polo players. Fourteen-year-old Giovy Jimenez of the renowned Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach sang the national anthem. George Dupont, Executive Director of the Polo Museum and Hall of Fame, expertly handled the pre-game coin toss near midfield.

The club's traditional halftime champagne divot stomp continued with a twist as four 2004 Hummers, the official vehicle of International Polo Club Palm Beach, raced onto the field, bearing the bubbly. The Mighty Wolverine Sound Pep Band of Wellington High School entertained the crowd at halftime.

Prior to the polo match, more than 240 guests dined on a delicious brunch catered by The Breakers before heading into the stadium to catch all the exciting action in the 22-goal Hall of Fame Cup match.

On the field, Everglades came back from a 4-1 deficit to register an 8-6 victory over Las Monjitas. Everglades patron Skeeter Johnston, who scored one goal and was instrumental in rallying his team, was named the game's MVP.
The Hall of Fame Cup in named in honor of the Polo Museum and Hall of Fame in Lake Worth that houses polo memorabilia from the early 1900s through the present and is open to the public. Many Hall of Fame inductees attended the game, including Red Armour, S.K. (Skey) Johnston Jr., Memo Gracida, Tommy Wayman and Bill Ylvisaker. Joe Wayne Barry, the son of the late Joe Barry, a recent Hall of Fame inductee, played for Everglades.
Seventeen teams entered the 22-goal Hall of Fame Cup with the final scheduled for Sunday, February 29 at 3 p.m. High-goal polo action continues every Sunday at 3 p.m. The polo game is open to the public with tickets beginning at $10 each.
