horse Firestone Takes A Gamble And Wins The $50,000 King Shavings Grand Prix Presented By Cosequin®

Indio, CA (February 2, 2003)—East Coast rider, Alison Firestone of Upperville, VA, took the East/West gamble by hopping a plane to California to compete in a World Cup qualifying class—the $50,000 King Shavings Grand Prix, presented by Cosequin. As it turned out, lady luck smiled on Alison as she and her mount Casanova won the class at the HITS Indio Desert Circuit. Of course a rider needs more than luck for the gamble to pay off, and Firestone proved to be the best of a field of thirty-three entries, including twenty-five World Cup hopefuls.

For her win, Firestone has accumulated 20 points in her quest to qualify for the 2003 World Cup Finals in Las Vegas, Nevada. Firestone will fly in again for the next Grand Prix event on February 9th at the HITS Indio Desert Circuit. Vegas is calling, and Alison Firestone is prepared to take the gamble.

The 13-obstacle course designed by David Ballard proved challenging with only three riders turning in clear rounds. Firestone and Casanova, the twelfth in the order, gave the crowd the first clear round. Will Simpson and his mount El Campeons Ado Annie also delivered a faultless first round, with John French and Millenium following up with the last clear round of the field.

Firestone was the first to return for the jump-off, turning in a faultless round in 38.92 seconds. Will Simpson followed up with the fastest time of 35.84 seconds, but knocked an unlucky rail at the double. John French and Millenium kept the crowd in suspense as they clocked in a penalty-free time of 39.44 seconds, finishing just half a second behind Firestone.

Other major award winners at the Indio Desert Circuit II included:

Bayer Legend Leading Hunter Rider - Peter Fletcher, TX
Bayer Legend Leading Jumper Rider - Susan Hutchison, CA
HBO Junior Medal Winner - Tedra Bates, CA
Charles Owen Children's Medal Winner - Mallory Olson, CA
Charles Owen Adult Medal Winner - Marnye Langer, CA

Show jumping will resume at the HITS Indio Desert Horse Park on Wednesday, February 5th. The $75,000 Bayer/USET Grand Prix will be the feature event of the week, taking place on Sunday, February 9 at 1:00pm. Kids Day presented by Fox 11 KDFX will also take place on February 9th from 11 am - 1:00 pm. The day will feature pony rides, face painting, a petting zoo, games, prizes, crafts, and entertainment for children and their parents.
