Selection
KWPN Select Sale known
After
three successful editions, the KWPN Select Sale has
earned a fixed place in the programme of the KWPN stallion
approvals in Den Bosch. On Saturday 7 February 23 stallions
will come under auctioneer Hans Sinnige's hammer. The
group of three-year-old stallions that have been selected
for the auction are extremely interesting for both sport
and breeding. The selection committee of the KWPN Select
Sale is extremely satisfied with the quality of the
stallions that, after the first viewing, were up for
offer at the selection days. All horses have been chosen
for breeding, type, movement and free jumping. Above
all, the horses have undergone X-rays and veterinary
clinical examinations. |
All
the stallions are presented in the catalogue, which will
come out in the first week of January. Images of each stallion
have been recorded and can be seen on the presentation DVD.
The quality in general is excellent and there are a number
of outstanding examples: one of the horses that was very
much admired at the first viewing in Ermelo is U2. This
son of Sunny Boy out of Fastrona 'keur preferent' (sire
Aktion) is owned by Gerrit en Leontien ter Hamsel of Enter.
UB40 too (Olivi x Michelangelo) of family Van Os has made
a big impression at Ermelo and at the selection days of
the auction at Roosendaal.

FEI
World Cup Jumping
Swedish Magic In Mechelen....
Swedens
Rolf-Goran Bengtsson headed the line-up at the seventh
leg of the FEI World Cup Jumping series in Mechelen,
Belgium tonight when scorching to victory with Mac
Kinley in the Land Rover Grand Prix.
Course
designer Lucien Somers set them a tough test over
his 13-fence track and Rolf-Goran said "the oxers
were big and wide with some tricky distances so it
was quite difficult in the first round".
The
tall planks at the third element of the treble combination
at fence 10 hit the floor many times as the later
part of the course took its toll, and many of the
most likely contenders paid the price for a single
error including Hollands Eric Van der Vleuten
and Audis Jikke, winners at the opening leg
of the current series in Helsinki in October.
|
Unluckiest
of all perhaps was Bruno Broucqault who left all the poles
in place but picked up just a single time fault with Hooligan
de Rosyl but, as it turned out, that was good enough to
secure sixth place at the end of the day as only five riders
went into the jump-off and the Frenchman now shares equal-ninth
position on the leaderboard with Malin Baryard.

FEI
World Cup Dressage Qualifier, Mechelen, Belgium, 29th
December 2003
Spirit of Song accompanies Salinero to victory
Anky
van Grunsven showed she is back on top form with a
resounding victory in the FEI World Cup Dressage Qualifier
in Mechelen. The Dutch ace rode her young talent Gestion
Salinero to victory here last year, but disaster was
to befall her weeks later when injuries sustained
in a fall at home put paid to her competitive hopes
for much of the year. Here this year, the nine-year-old
Salinero exhibited a new level of accomplishment and
surety in a breathtaking performance to a new freestyle
programme L'Esprit Chanson designed by Cees Slings
and Viktor Kerkoff. The whole package could only be
described as brilliant.
Van
Grunsven, the reigning Olympic champion who won the
World Cup a record five times on her wonderful partner
Gestion Bonfire, has now risen to third place in the
season's rankings, and is on course for a place at
the final in Dusseldorf (April 1-4 2004).

FEI
World Cup Dressage
CDI-W Mechelen 26-30th December 2003
Tomorrow
in Mechelen, Belgium the Dutch invasion on the FEI
World Cup dressage rankings is set to take place.
In
today's qualifying grand prix, places were won and
the grid positions decided for tomorrow's freestyle
to music, where the big business of accumulating ranking
points towards a place in the FEI World Cup Final
(Dusseldorf April 1-4) commences.
Five-time
World Cup winner and reigning Olympic champion Anky
van Grunsven swept to a clear victory with Gestion
Salinero in the qualifying grand prix today, with
stable mate Edward Gal in second place with Gestion
Lingh and in third, Antoinette Falandt, who scored
the highest for Holland at the European Championships,
riding Jarwo. So far the German competitors, punctuated
by young British rider Emma Hindle's assault, which
has put her second so far, have dominated the rankings.

Kurten
Delivers Irish Double At Mechelen
WITHIN
two hours of Conor Swail winning the Nekkerhal Cup
at the last of the big 2003 European indoor show jumping
venues today (Saturday), Ireland's Jessica Kurten
delivered the double by taking the coveted Queen's
Cup at Mechelen, Belgium.
Riding
her veteran 17 yr old bay <Paavo N>, Co. Antrim-born
Kurten took the Cup - reserved for female riders only
- from Belgium's own Adeline Lefevre, with just fractions
of a second between them in the jump-off.
Kurten,
though, will now have her sights firmly fixed on the
World Cup classes, the climax of which happens on
Tuesday, December 30, with the Land Rover Grand Prix.

Show
Jumping - Swail Wins At Mechelen
MALAHIDE-based
Conor Swail, who recently celebrated his 32nd birthday,
flew the colours for Ireland at today's (Saturday)
World Cup show in Mechelen, Belgium, with a win in
the major Nekkerhal Cup class.
Riding
the Edward Cawley-owned <Windgates King Koal>,
Swail came in just under a second faster than Belgium's
own show jumping hero, Ludo Philippaerts, on <Verelst
Quebec>. After today's win with <Windgate's
King Koal> at Mechelen, rider Conor Swail said:
<< I am delighted to have him back to full health,
and I'm looking forward to a successful season with
him in 2004!>>
|
The
win will be particularly poignant for both Swail and Cawley,
as King Koal underwent a prolonged recovery period earlier
this year after a serious bout of colic. And although there
were doubts that the 15 year-old bay would ever compete
at top level again, the horse has bounced back onto the
international circuit with apparently renewed vigour, placing
well at both Milan and Belfast during the last six weeks.

FEI
World Cup Driving
Schrijvers wins FEI World Cup Driving at home soil
Gert
Schrijvers has won the FEI World Cup Driving competition
during the Flanders Christmas Horse Show in Mechelen,
Belgium. Encouraged by the enthusiastic crowd in the
sold out Nekkerhal, Schrijvers drove his team of Arabo
Friesian sport horses fluently through the course,
designed by German course designer Falk Böhnisch.
For Schrijvers it is his first win in the three year
old history of the World Cup. OI am very pleased with
my performance. The horses went very well and I did
not make any mistakes myself,¹ explains Schrijvers,
who used the same horses as he does during the outdoor
season. By winning in Mechelen, Schrijvers has climbed
to the second place in the standings, which is led
by Michael Freund.
