The
2003 Winter Equestrian Festival
Wellington,
Florida January 3, 2003 -- With over $3 Million in
prize money at stake, The 2003 Winter Equestrian Festival
(WEF) promises to be one of the most highly
competitive in its 31-year history. Produced by founder
Eugene R. Mische and Stadium Jumping, Inc., WEF is the horse
show of all horse shows in the U. S. Over 4,000 horses and
6,000 people (riders, trainers, owners and grooms) will
be added to the Wellington population during this time.
Commencing
on Wednesday, January 22, 2003 at The Palm Beach Polo Equestrian
Club in Wellington, the best horses and riders in the world
in the equestrian disciplines of hunters, jumpers, equitation
and dressage will square off against the very best of their
peers. The hunter, jumper and equitation horses will compete
in Wellington for seven weeks through Sunday, March 9, 2003,
with the last dressage competition takes place during the
week of March 13th.
Spectators
can expect to enjoy classes for all age groups and discipline
interests. And with as many as seven rings going at any
one time, there will be something for every member of the
family. There will be hunter, jumper and equitation classes
for children and junior riders, mounted on ponies and small/large
horses. Adult amateurs of all ages will be represented in
hunter, jumper and equitation classes. The professional
and advanced amateur riders will dominate the competition
in pre-green, green and regular hunter divisions as well
as at many levels of the jumper classes. The dressage competitions,
with elegance and grace, will captivate all audiences.
When
its time to take a break from the varied competitions,
spectators can browse amongst the many eclectic boutiques
or grab a bite from one of the multi-ethnic food tents.
And theres always a place to sit, as ringside seating
is plentiful.

event
"How
to talk horse talk and train better," will be demonstrated
by internationally known author/trainer Don Blazer at the
12th annual Trumbull County 4-H Equine Development symposium

using the horse's natural instincts, gaining the horse's
respect and eliciting his desire for praise and acceptance
by his trainer. Blazer will ride local horses, demonstrating
how the techniques are applied. Blazer's presentation will
begin at 1 p.m. at the Trumbull Career & Technical Center
in Champion, OH.
Open to the public, there is no admission fee. There will
be a new and used tack sale. All proceeds from the event
will benefit the Trumbull County 4-H. The event is being

The
Sorraia Horse
When the Sorraia horse was discovered in 1920, few could
believe that a wild horse subspecies could have survived
that long in Europe. A few decades earlier, the Mongolian
wild horse had been all but wiped out, with just a few
specimens saved in zoological gardens, and the East
European Tarpan had become extinct even earlier. There
were already zoologists ready to deny the Tarpan the
status of a true wild horse, just because they hadn't
had a chance to study and scientifically describe the
Tarpan before he vanished forever. Zoologists had ignored
him until it was too late. |
They
were going to do the same with the Sorraia, even though
the Portuguese scientist who discovered this horse, Ruy
d'Andrade, did his level best to study the Sorraia, preserve
him, and make the zoological community aware of him. In
this respect the Sorraia shares his fate with the English
Exmoor pony: although significant evidence exists for the
Exmoor to be not a man-made breed, but a remnant of an ancestral
wild horse, many, if not most, zoologists wouldn't hear
of it. Wild horses in our civilized Europe? Come on!

Condios
a "Top 10 Stallion" at the Sales
Condios,
Morningside Stud's showjumping star, continued to show his
value as a sire when his name appeared in the Irish Farmers
Journal's list of "The top 10 stallions at the sales."
The
list contains the names of the sires in Ireland whose progeny
sold for the top 10% at public auction. Condios is the youngest
approved stallion on the exclusive list.
It
is not just Condios foals that sold for good money in 2002.
In the spring a 2-year-old stallion by Condios out of a
May Sherif mare sold for euro23,000. This is reputed to
be the largest sum ever paid for a 2-year-old sport horse
in Ireland.

U.S.
Nationals Provides a Grand Finale to End of Show Season
The
36th U.S. National Arabian and Half-Arabian Championship
Horse Show held October 11-18 at the Kentucky Fair
and Exhibition Center in Louisville, Ky. featured
the best and brightest Arabian and Half-Arabian horses
from 52 different states and provinces. The International
Arabian Horse Association® (IAHA®) of Aurora,
Colo., produced the event. The U.S. Nationals is considered
the most prestigious North American championship in
the Arabian show horse industry, and this year's flagship
event offered fun, excitement and beautiful Arabian,
Half-Arabian and Anglo-Arabian horses. When the final
numbers were tallied, 2, 216 horses came to Louisville.
Both amateur and professional riders or handlers competed
in 120 classes ranging from halter, native costume,
reining, working cow, cutting, trail, dressage, show
hack, hunter/jumper, sidesaddle, park, driving and
English, western and hunter pleasure classes.
|
Four
new Arabian halter classes made their debut at U.S. Nationals
with the split of the stallion and mare championships into
junior and senior divisions. The creation of a junior and
senior championship not only gave halter fans two additional
champions to root for but nearly doubled the number of mare
and stallion entries overall.

Doubting
Thomas saved by his Equitector boots
New York mounted policeman Thomas Catanzaro tells us
of his experience with the Equitector Chill Master Riding
Boot.
S o
far I found them good with the cold weather. The boots
are very comfortable.
But I have to tell you something. I am not a fan of
the steel toed boots, but yesterday I was walking my
horse from the trailer to the barn after a day out on
patrol when my horse stepped high over the curb and
came down hard on my left toe.
I
have never had a horse step on my foot so solid. There
is a scuff in the leather from the stud that is welded
to the bottom of the shoe but my toes were not touched.
I am sure I could have broken a toe or something worse
since the horse I had yesterday was a big Quarter Horse.
Did I tell you it was the first day wearing the boots.
I guess that steel toe boots are not a bad idea after
all.
